I don't think it mattered in the overall outcome (we still had the war) but I think he had other reasons to care about freeing the slaves that his good heart. The north's economy was being tanked by the south because the south had free labor. Add that with the slave revolts going on in other countries at the time and it seems pretty logical to get one step ahead of the curve.
