CDC urges Americans to 'avoid all travel' to Mexico after the country surpasses 1.1M COVID-19 cases with a 9.5% fatally rate - the second worst in the world - as US airlines see increased demand for winter travel to the nation
- Mexico has surpassed more than 1.11 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and reported over 105,000 deaths - the fourth highest death toll in the world
- Only the United States, Brazil, and India have reported more deaths than Mexico
- The country’s actual case and death tally is believed to be much higher partly because of low testing levels compared to other nations
- Mexico also has the second-highest case fatality rate per every 100,000 residents in the world at 9.5 percent, with only Yemen reporting higher
- The CDC posted an update to its website on November 21 raising its travel warning the Mexico to level 4, its highest designation
- Further, in a Monday statement, the head of the World Health Organization said the country was ‘in bad shape’ in its battle against the virus
There's some issues with the math there. It would be about 83 deaths per 100,000, not 9.5%, It's .083%. As for case fatality rate, the 9.5% is more accurate, based on known cases. But, as is stated in this information, the tests are not as available in Mexico. If the cfr in Mexico were to be more in line with most other places, they probably have had over 10 million cases that were never tested.
What we will see, by the end of the pandemic, is that cases and death percentages are going to be about even most places. I've said several times that one of the biggest issues for fatality rates is demographics. The areas that have the highest populations of vulnerable people will largely have the highest death counts. All this obsession over which states and countries are doing best or worst is a massive waste of time and effort.
Maybe cracking down until the vaccines roll out will show some improvement in outcome, but the countries that have done that are only able to do so because the rest of the world is not. They will rely heavily on foreign aid to keep their economies from completely falling apart. That's just not a strategy the whole world can follow.
