While one does not think of the hot dog as a sandwich, it does meet the criteria.

First, let us define the Sandwich:

sandwich
[sand-wich, san-]
noun
  1. two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.
And the Hot Dog:

hot dog
[noun hot dawg; interjectionhotdawg]
noun
  1. a frankfurter.
  2. a sandwich consisting of a frankfurter in a split roll, usually eaten with mustard, sauerkraut, or relish.
Now, quite often in the debate community, the subject of sandwich orientation is used by the Hot Dog Sandwich Deniers as evidence. This argument is clearly proven to be folly.

One could consume the classic sandwich in a horizontal position. It is still a sandwich. A hot dog is no different. Anyone who has suffered from "roll breakage " knows this. You rotate the sandwich to continue eating.

A Hot Dog is indeed a sandwich in every sense of the word.
