The origin of Labor Day goes back to the 1890's when Pres Glover Cleveland sent troops to end the Pullman Railcar strike. He sent 12k troops to put people back to 7 day 12 hr shifts making the Pullman Rail cars. Cleveland lost his big for reelection and thus we have a paid day off. Even though some work groups at UPS havent had a contract in 4 years, due to another Law, the RLA of 1929, someday maybe this law will be striken from the books. Pilots and mechanics and railroad workers cannot strike due to this ancient law. We are even asked by UPS Grade 20s to send a letter to make FDX use this law to cheat their employees. Instead of trying to stick FDX, UPS should lobby to get rid of the RLA of 1929 so all work groups will be on a fair and level field. The UPS Pilots spent years without a contract and after almost 5 years they received a fair deal. Now the mechanics are looking at 5 years without a contract and we are only asking for pennies but UPS wants us to pay for Grade 20s to have fat pockets. I hope everyone has a great Labor Day, and maybe UPS will see that it is time to reward the mechanics with a long overdue contract.
