Last week our center manager announced Ups's position on the mandatory mask wearing and said the union agreed to the disciplinary process. For people who refuse to wear a mask, it goes warning and you get sent home, next time it's a suspension, then third time is termination. Turns out he was talking out of his ass because the union did not agree to any such thing, but there has been a lot of discussion over it. The company is taking a hard stand on the issue and want to issue discipline, while the union so far is planning on fighting any discipline on the issue although a statement from our BA today said the company will terminate employees who refuse to wear a mask and will be held out until the next panel hearing. That could go either way so it's scary to think of how many drivers could be out for months waiting to see if they'll be reinstated (most likely without back pay). That got me thinking of hypotheticals... what would happen if everybody in a center refused. What would Ups do? There is no way they can fire all of it's employees, so the company would have to give in and just make masks an optional thing IMO. I have always said that as a union, we have soooooooooooo much power over this company. The only problem is we are so divided and many are so uninformed that we give away a lot of the power we have. If EVERY employee utilized the contract and federal/state laws we could cripple this company and make lasting changes to improve our working conditions. A perfect example is the handling of over 70s, which is getting way out of hand. If every single driver messaged in for help delivering every over 70 like the contract affords us, then the company would have no choice but to either severely limit the amount of over 70s OR create a new job class where 2 people go out delivering only over 70s. But sadly 99.999% of drivers never use the driver assist option. Not to mention they would have to basically discontinue any over 70s on rural routes because it would cost them too much in time and miles sending a driver from neighboring route to assist. Now that snowballs and effects 9.5 hours, DOT hours, etc. In conclusion, WE NEED TO UNITE AND BE A :censored:ING UNION FOR ONCE AND STAND UP TO THIS COMPANY! We have way more power than they want us to know we have.
