Not quite the same thing but your story reminded of when I was on vacation waaay back in the summer of '94. I got a call bright and early on Wednesday morning from my center manager who was on "vacation" as well. He asked me if I could do him a favor and come in and run one of the heavier downtown routes. center manager told me he would have the late pickups pulled off as well as taking off one of the heavy security government buildings. I was only 3 years in and still trying to be Mr. UPS and a team player so I agreed. I knew it was a mistake before I even left the building. Whole route was in, no one was covering any pickups, and there was a room to room two building split from the next route over just thrown down the center of the car! I thought to myself its OK. I'll only take 10 minutes to grab a sandwich for lunch and if I crank it out all day I can get it done by 5:00 and not have any missed pieces or pickups. So at 4:55 I back into the loading dock at the last pickup quite pleased with myself as I had blasted the route out and ended up with what was probably a 10.5 hour planned day. Being a bonus driver it would be a nice little check for a day's work. I was a little bent about being taken advantage of but the day was just about over and I still had the rest of my vacation to enjoy.....or so I thought. Sitting on the p/u book was a note that said call your office. "Hello?" "You left me a message to call you." "Need you to go help Washington when you are done." "You're kidding right?" "No, you need to take 40 stops from him." "Is this a joke? I'm on vacation this week! Gilbert asked me to do him a favor and come in and run this today." "Gilbert is being transferred this week. He is no longer center manager." "Well I'm not helping Washington. I had a split from Brown on here too and as soon as the bookstore closes out I'm heading back." "I'm instructing you to help Washington." "I'm supposed to be on VACATION!" "That has nothing to do with me. You either help Washington or leave your ID on my desk when you punch out." "EXCUSE ME?" "You are refusing to work as directed. That is grounds for termination." "You can't expect me to do that. I won't make the air trai..." "I SAID I AM INSTRUCTING YOU TO HELP WASHINGTON!" I didn't say anything for about 30 seconds. I felt so violated and disrespected. I regained my composure and said "OK, fine. You win." and hung up the phone. I finished the bookstore p/u then took the other 50 minutes of my lunch and my 10 minute break and after driving around "looking" for Washington for a while found him at about 7:00. I took 40 stops from him, managed to get them all delivered and returned to UPS at about 11:00 pm with a package car that had almost 300 ground pickups and 50 air pickups on it. I talked to no one, punched out, and went home. The following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I was "sick" and called in. Walking into the offices Thursday morning to give them my doctor's note (pays off to be nice to customers....) the onroad supe says "You are going to pay for your crimes!" I just smile, hand him my doctor's note and say "I was just working as directed." The whole incident really opened my eyes to the "real" UPS. There have been a few really decent CMs and onroads over the years but they all have left UPS. I did end up having to pay for my crimes....it took a few years but UPS did me one even dirtier then this......but that's a tale for another time.
