Pick one.
I'm not cheering for socialism. I think it will greatly damage the country. But the wealthy need to develop a sense of altruism. Doesn't mean they can't have nice things. But it's glaringly obvious that the working poor greatly resent their wealth and are really warming to the idea of a more, in their view, equitable system. The future leaders in colleges across the country seem more onboard with it now than ever before. So live it up at your own risk. Don't know if it will ever come to that, but the French Revolution ended very badly for the aristocracy. At least in this country we have the vote, not necessary to start killing people.

I already only work enough to earn the minimum necessary to support me and my lifestyle. It still isn't even much yet I look like I make much more than I do. In a socialist system I would do friend* all. Eventually they'd run out of everyone's money, everything would collapse, and I'd probably just high-tail it to a new life in a third world country with my life savings cashed out in gold.

Personally I think spending that kind of money on a depreciating asset is wrong. I don't care if someone has $100 million in the bank, there are a lot of people in need who'd greatly benefit from that kind of money. Buy a dozen poor single moms a new car. Spend the rest on scholarships, medical bills, that kind of thing. I don't begrudge wealthy people having money, but no one needs a 20,000 sq ft home with the best of everything. No one really needs a vehicle that costs more than $40k and the $40k ones should be for large families or pickups. A lot of talk here about socialism and morality but we wouldn't have a population eyeing socialism if those truly blessed would be more generous. Sorry to hijack your post but this is a major pet peeve.
Screw the poor. Live big!

Compare the choices you have with a guy making $10hr. $15hr. Where does he run to when it all goes to crap? I sense you want to defend capitalism vs my defending socialism. I'm not defending socialism and you're right, eventually it'll collapse. I'm just pointing out the obvious. I worked in a lot of places for FedEx and many people wrongly assumed I made the kind of money UPS made. The anger and snide remarks were palpable. There are a lot of people out there just waiting for a Bernie Sanders to lead them to a better life. And the bonus is they get to screw the rich in the bargain. When college age adults start believing they can make it work we're in trouble.

The funny thing is I can still make these choices on less than $15 (and have). What these people would need for a Bernie Sanders to lead them to another life though is other people's money. And I won't be contributing much to that pot should the day come. Like I said, third world oceanfront bamboo mansion.

And you have money in the bank because you're getting by ok on a lot less than $35hr. But tell that to the $12hr warehouse worker trying to feed his family. You're not going to vote for a socialist. They might.

More than ok and it is a lot less than $35. Good decisions are such a burden.

Again, you have money in the bank. You have great benefits. It's very smart on your part to save like crazy for what you want. Tens of millions of people have never had the options you had. And they're angry about it. That's what will drive us into socialism. People who are satisfied with what they have don't vote socialist unless they're rabid true believers.

I have 0 benefits right now (I'm not at UPS). I first entered the workforce during the recession at $8.50. I moved up and took care of business by being self-aware, ruthless, and busting my ass. I will not bring myself down to anyone else's level.

Good for you. But you're making this all about you. Millions bust their ass trying to raise a family. And a lot of them desperately want a better life. I'm glad you were blessed with innate superiority. Most people just want to do better.

But it's no one's obligation to give it to them. I'm not even sure what we're debating anymore.

You seemed to take umbrage at the notion that the wealthy should freely look for situations where their wealth can help.
Right but my point was that people can spend their money however they want for all I care. It might sound mean but if people can't afford their families and have the lifestyle they want, they should've picked better. Stop pumping them out like puppies.

You've got a lot of countries now where the replacement rate isn't keeping up. The only reason we are is immigration, legal and otherwise. A lot of people desperately want children but can't afford them. All of this is driving the masses towards a socialist state, which was my point all along. If the wealthy, who have more than they need, were to help others directly instead of writing off some amount to a foundation, they would engender good will. Otherwise socialism is inevitable because a large portion of the population wants to pay as little as possible so that they can have that huge house and sportscar some day. Every once in awhile you hear about some rich person doing a really wonderful thing. But too few and far between.
