Most likely if it actually happened they showed up and had "mechanical" problems.

Not at MEM. They typically kill the Nashville flight first if there's a staffing issue, as it's the shortest flight out of MEM, and then the next shortest flight (Birmingham or St Louis, IIRC), and then the next, and so on as needed.
