Believe it or not there are members who step up and fill in the gap for the members who don't come to meetings, knowing that they depend on stewards to explain the situation to them and most all of our building votes because they know the stewards have their backs. The blind insults on here are a bit overzealous often and even tho it really doesn't matter in reality it does...to a few who bleed family and personal time for good members who struggle to stand up for themselves. Does that make stewards better than the membership? Heck no, but down deep and inside, after seeing abusive work environment prospering without a response there are some people born with the spine to say "Nope, this stops today" and regardless of the cost they face the wind. The President of local 100 in the Cincinnati, Ohio area stood up and took the hit when he was a steward while trying to get OSHA egress issues addressed. After the company got their over $200,000 fine (and it was posted in Bloomberg media) he was taken out of service for several months for a nit picky and ridiculous issue. Bill then came back to work and ran against his local leadership, winning the President position. The members backed him up because they trusted him and they stepped up to vote when they were needed. That right there is enough thanks from the membership to keep fighting for. Let's not sell good teamsters short.
