The British did that in 1997, the treaty they signed with China is supposed to give Hong Kong the right to self-govern until 2047. For us to intervene in Hong Kong's defense would likely mean declaring, or threatening to declare, all out war with China. If Trump did that you would say he was wrong, and you say he is wrong to not intervene. He may be doing a terrible job of using diplomacy and economic sanctions to keep China in line, but at least he's not too quick to go in, guns blazin'.
