UPS CEO gets coveted Horatio Alger Award; still can’t outrank Big Bird - Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The night before he was scheduled to announce his selection as CEO of United Parcel Service a few years ago, David Abney telephoned his daughter Valerie to break the news to her first.
“Papa is going to be on TV tomorrow,” Valerie announced to her 3-year-old who sat nearby. “Would you like to watch?”
Without hesitating, Sam answered, “No. I watch Big Bird.”
Abney shared that story with me just days after returning home from Washington, D.C., where he picked up one of this year’s coveted Horatio Alger medals.
