EAMKing, I can relate to your start time. I leave my house at 5:30 AM, no traffic jams on my 26 mile commute. I am surprised at how many people are out on the road though. Usually everybody leaves home about 7 AM around here and it get gridlocked. I get off at 5PM, so I get caught in it going home. My current vehicle is a 2002 Chevy S-10, 105K miles on it with the original tires. Don't laugh, its paid for! I like Browniehound's comments about how we waste so much fuel. I haven't bought anything with a V8 in it since 1976. I don't have a boat or camper to pull so I have no need for it. I bought a 2008 Ford Escape a few months ago to replace our Chevy Trailblazer because of the price of gas. Our two sons are off to college so its just the two of us now. I test drove the Escape Hybrid, but the extra price and insurance cost would have cost me more in the long run. I squeeze 28 MPG highway out of the 3.0L V6 compared to the hybrid's 30 MPG. I live in a county that is a suburb of Atlanta, and we don't have good public transportation to get around on. We have county van pools and limited bus service, but no subways or direct bus routes to get around on. And there is no way I would want to move to the area I work in.
