Like many wild animals, they can adapt to the presence of humans. But at heart they are still wild animals and when their instincts kick in they will act as such. Trying to make "pets" out of wild animals is wrong, and downright dangerous for both the animal and the human. A lot of well-meaning people try to make pets out of wild animals that they find, and the results are almost always bad. There was a lady in my state who started feeding the black bears that lived on and around her property, and it got to the point where they were eating bunches of grapes and melons right out of her hand. The bears lost their instinctual fear of humans, and started foraging for food around the homes of her neighbors. One of the bears actually squeezed itself through a neighbors dog door and started trashing the inside of the kitchen and the owner of the home had to shoot it. The state game department wound up fining the woman a substantial amount in order to force her to stop feeding them.
