Is there any reason for FedEx to keep contractors?

Question is how many suckers can the find to be contractors in a deal that makes no sense for the few with capital or knowledge to invest in a losing proposition.

Toledo Express station is being merged into Ground , new FedEx one being built n Bowling Green. Toledo multi belt large station covers northwest Ohio, many medium size cities spread out over large area. Less profitable Ground routes being assigned to contractors. Express keeping more dense urban routes, , that’s what you need contractors for and Jason will be happy to put it to them.

Keeping the profitable and easy to do in town routes of both Ground and Express boxes for themselves then dump the money losing rural routes onto contractors many of them long serving contractors who don't deserve this.

A rotten deal to begin with has become even worse. Who would ever want to take this deal?

Its interesting to see how different areas of the country are being treated by Express. The three Express stations in my immediate area are hiring full time couriers off the street like crazy. Saw a few more FT courier job postings on FedEx careers this morning at two local stations. One manager said within the last month they have hired 30 couriers at a station that has only 70 couriers to begin with. 10 part time and 20 full time. Its not because people are leaving. Some of these people don't have routes because there is nothing for them to do. There is no room to get them into a defensive driving class, so the ride around all day with a driver playing with a leo learning how to do pick up and deliveries.

Must be playing it safe by making it certain that they have enough box mules to get them through peak.

Sounds like everyone is going part time.

Whats peak? Express has not seen a peak in over 5 years. There is a increase in volume a few days before Christmas and thats about it. You don't go out and hire 30 employees to cover a couple busy days.

Your reasoning would be more sound if all new 30 employees that were hired are all part time. Considering that 20 out of the 30 are full time would not indicate that Express is moving to a PT work force in this market.

Chess game. Can't have full-timers leaving en masse!

At Express trucking people were hired full time to help fill in for the constant turnover of drivers. RTD probably 30-40 % contractors.

They can't fill the RT positions at my station, they are part time though.
We can barely fill our positions. Have to post some positions with waivers. You talk to the couriers and let them know about upcoming RT positions and what a cake job it is and they are not interested. Most employees under 35 are a bunch of pussiesss and lack confidence. Afraid to drive a big vehicle, don't like to drive, don't want to work nights, don't want to work weekends, have to get home to play Xbox or Playstation with their friends at night. The excuses go on and on. Meanwhile they sit around in a shetty courier job and should that job ever disappear, they have no skillset or advanced license to put themselves in contention for some kind of career in another field.

The drivers we do get over the last couple years have problems passing the DMV tests and we have had to displace a few and send back to the baby trucks to drive around looking at a glorified cell phone, completing their daily dot to dot package delivery

Couriers tell me their happy where they are at, the question is FedEx happy where they are at, the answer is they want to pay Ground wages and benefits, they soon will.
