brownboy, since you haven't responded, I will assume that you have come to realize that the return is not worth the time that you spend earning it.

I have tried to lay low for the most part on this but its getting a bit outta hand. Upstate lets aggree to disaggree. I take offense in your chastising ANYONE for actively trying to have a better retirement, for planning ahead. And your arguement/posts can be interpreted as doing just that. With that being said I will bet you my entire YEAR'S pay that the week's financial ROE is much greater than say your ROE for the time you spend posting on every concievable Brown Cafe thread you can get your hands on. I'd also be willing to bet the time spent on researching potential picks is less than 1/4 the time you spend on BC.

Take this thread for whats being offered; information from your fellow co-workers that maybe helpfull to others without costing them anything but the time to read it and hopefully motivation and encouragement to plan ahead.

Q1, 2013 ended Thursday. 401K up 9.82%.

So tempting to re-allocate to try and lock in some of those gains. I read an article in Bloomberg about this current bull market. It is the 7th longest in history and has the 5th largest gain at almost a 140%.

Will run the numbers tonight on the broker account.

Is this really a bull market? Stocks are not that much higher on the whole then they were in 1999. More of a correction from the bottom of 2009.

Your almighty Obama dollar is worth way less now than 2007! I think the Dow needs to be at 20000 just for all of us to be ahead!

the difference in a $40K account is roughly $1,500 in 3 months. I am in my 8th year so that 1,500 compounded for the next 22 years is significant, if only in my mind. Spending 30 mins once a month isn't exactly micro-managed if you ask me. With that being said my current allocations are set pretty high in the whole risk/reward spectrum.

The Bloomberg article lists this current bull run as ongoing from March 9, 2009

The "current dollar" is, always has been, and always will be worth less than the 6 years prior. Its called inflation, and is the single most important factor in DGI investing. Whats your point? Brownmonster is correct (I like the divi stock pun :smart:) I also really like the new spicey chicken sandwich for a buck!

Merril Lynch account Q1 results +9.51%.

I sat there and took about 15 mins writting down the numbers and using the calcuator. Finished, then checked Merrill Edge web page and only then saw the performance tab :knockedout:.
I have so much to learn!

I had a 9.4% increase for 1st qtr. I reallocated funds toward the beginning of year. Dumped some stocks\mutual funds and added some higher quality mutual funds (4 or 5 star rated). I also invested a little bit in a very risk mutual fund that went up 30% since I bought it in January. That's my one and only risky one. I should dump soon, but will probably roll the dice a bit more.

markets back open

Woke up to $577.00 in dividends today (that's what is all about)
next payout $203.00 4-18-13

Syracuse vs Wichita State would make a great final game

1st quarter 401k +11.91% (+$14,374.08)

best performers
OHI +36.24%
AI +20.11%
NYMT +16.20%
NYCB +12.40%
AT&T +11.39%
worst
PSEC -2.82%
RNO -3.47%

if RNO does what i think it's going to do % is going higher

market weird today...most of my watch list hammered but market only -5.69% (felt it should of been down -100 points) scary for me

dividends are protection when the down slide happens

glad to see everyone did well in the 1st quarter of 2013 (one of the best quarters in history i think)

up next quarter #2 (market isn't going up another 2k points)

stock pickers vs funds (a lot like sports)

good luck to everyone who invests their hard earned money in the market (not an easy game)

A 401K is intended to last 30 plus years after retirement. Can't really worry about the day to day rise and fall of the markets.

$27k in a Scottrade account (thats todays money)really have to watch the day to day markets
don't have 401k in fund accounts...mine is in a self managed account to buy/sell stocks
buy dividend stocks and get paid

bought 65 more shares of PSEC @$10.71 in Scottrade account
PSEC total shares = 1,983 = $218.13 per month (401k/Scottrade)

RNO was up 28 points before home construction (zero hiring) news broke and send the market sinking
was up to $13.68...ended $13.34

both accounts -$1,584.22 today (always gotta take the good with the bad)

NYCB starting to come down (made $20k) last year on this bank
made 2 big bets and they paid off (doing now with RNO)
i own 1,035 shares
has paid a .25 cent dividend over the last 8 years
closed at $13.65 (i bought at $12.65)

solid investment

this is a good price and if goes lower even better

Really?
You waste your time and energy to lose money?
I just did a quick research on, PSEC, RNO,NYCB,ECT.
Maybe, you caught a quick nickle, but you lost the dime.
Each and everyone of these stocks had high dividend yields, but each lost value by 50% of the dividend yield compared to just being in an S&P fund for a 1 yr period/2012.
Trading is just playing craps at the casino.
I wish you well, but trying to game the system is not the way to gain lasting wealth.
