I talk to one of the specialists in our hub, he's a good guy and the ONLY source of valid information on new technology they put in our center. I find out what kind of metrics the systems are reporting and how long they are retained - that part of the conversation is for self-preservation.
In general, you're an individual contributor and depending upon how many other specialists are in your location, it's a lonely job. PT Sup's don't have a need/desire to talk to specialists and union members view them with suspicion. IMO.
Unless you're getting $18-20/hour or more, I'd encourage looking for a job where your technology skills will be best utilized. You'll also be working with very unique hardware/software so the experience you will gather will not be portable.
