I’ve flown standby many times and the gate agents are the ones who decide who gets seats. They have a priority list. I don’t understand why the passengers would be fighting each other over seats.

That’s really dumb. Standby rules are very strict as far as behavior goes. If they, or a relative, got the tickets, they will most likely be fired.
