Any Online DIAD III Training Materials You Guys Know About? To Help the Peak Newbies

Glad to have found this forum. Thanks in advance for your help.

They hired a bunch of driver helpers for peak, didn't bother to spend so much as one second even showing us the DIAD much less training people on them. I can't understand how they could think this increases our efficiency or usefulness to UPS or our drivers. It certainly makes newbies look stupid and slow and fumbling around on a valuable piece of equipment that they were never trained on.

Some drivers might take the time to actually EXPLAIN some of the functions and how to make corrections and get out of certain locked-up situations, but the routes and how busy they are makes this pretty limited even for the better "teachers" out there. Which is not what they were hired for! Others aren't that good at teaching or the routes too overloaded to do very much.

Does anyone know of any online resources for actual TRAINING on the DIAD III that we are supposed to be using?? This would be best. Or know how to go about diplomatically suggesting that management might share a training manual with us newbies. Time is short for us to impress our driver/bosses, and silly me for actually wanting to UNDERSTAND how to do the basic things correctly and learn on my own. And how to correct errors or escape from screens we might get trapped into.

I'm not looking to bitch.... just to LEARN, and quickly.... what we should have been taught or at least better introduced to. And let's not turn this into a management bitch session either LOL. Just help on the question asked. One of 2 hours of training from some HR "specialist" would have gone a long way to make the whole system work better during this peak season, and make us better temporary employees who might have a better chance to be rehired in the new year.

So if anybody has any training manual or knows where to go online to learn better how the functions and procedures work, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time, and hope to find some good and useful reading material for the weekend. :)

Re: Any Online DIAD III Training Materials

If you have access to UPSers.com I would check there first. You might not have much luck finding information though, because I imagine that the inner workings of the DIAD III and the current DIAD IV are closely guarded information. That site is worth a shot though.

If you don't have any luck on any of the external UPS sites, I would try one of the intranet sites from inside the hub or talk to one of the dispatchers. They've got little print-outs for driver helpers with tutorials on basic functions of the DIAD IV (don't know about III.) I won't go into any of those functions because nobody knows who is reading this.

The written "Training Materials" for DIAD 3 are probably long gone, it has been in service for a few years now. I never saw anything on DIAD 4, I was on vacation the week before it was implemented into my Center and I just had to figure it out myself. I use both of them now, 4 when I deliver by myself and 3 when I use my Helper. DIAD 3 is easier to use since it has no "Shift Key", although it is bigger, slightly heavier, and has a slower processor. With just two weeks left, I wouldn't worry too much about it though, just ask your Driver which arrow or escape key to push if you want to learn it.

This might seem pretty lame, but my helper was in the same situation, no training on DIAD 3, he was just "expected" to somehow pick everything up on his own. I actually drew out which keys to push in what order on both signature and DR stops. Dispite my brutal artwork and penmenship, my helper seemed to pick up on it and now has very little trouble. It's better than nothing.

Man I feel sorry for you guys that get no DIAD training. I've spent every morning for the last 2 weeks with new helpers and their drivers on route training the helpers to use the DIAD. An hour minimum (with the ones that pick it up fast) with each one of me telling them and then prompting and ok'ing what they are doing on both the III and the IV.

I believe this keeps them from quitting on us too.

The DIAD III is what they are using here for the Helpers during peak. Driver has his DIAD IV which he will occasionally handoff to get a signature when he has loaded the data but man I won't go there on any training in what to do next lol.

Thanks cpio for a good concrete suggestion. I don't know what is contained on UPSers.com but it seems reasonable to look there. Unfortunately, you need your Employee ID from your paycheck to create an account and verify your eligibility by constructing your PIN. By the time next Friday comes along and I get that info I will either have learned (or be better at faking learned lmao) or quit in frustration. I will try to contact HR or maybe the driver helper coordinator and see what I can get prior to then. But thanks, seems like a good idea.

Anyone who has access to UPSers.com know or can check if DIAD III training material is on there?

Also cpio mentioned looking over the intranet from within the Hub or trying to get an instruction card from one of the dispatchers. I just recall another new hire asking at the "training" if they were going to get an ID badge, and the reply was "No, you shouldn't ever be back here" (which I understand why NOT at this point on the photo ID, but not the concept of not feeling welcome back at the Hub.... we ARE supposed to be employees now! and should be able to make use of resources as needed).

Brownblue's approach is anything but lame. Sure beats the printed materials management gave out :) Conveying the sequential thought process behind how the machine is layed out would make such a difference.

"Bless You" VoiceofReason for training those Helpers.... your nickname seems very fitting btw :) How do I get you to spend an hour with me or most of our guys? Glad you were able to help out some of the new guys.

Any other lines on proper training material or help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying hard to get what should already have been given out and covered by management, seems so silly. Just want to look good to my Driver, work hard, and be more efficient. Isn't that what helps management increase productivity too? Gotta wonder.

Welcome to UPS Training!!!!. I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me when I was a helper. UPS is a survival environment, not a training envirnoment. We only train, when it helps us survive. (We only learn when it helps us survive as well).

My suggestion with you is to call the center team or manager and ask them to send your a "DIAD III, for helpers Made Simple" hand out. This is a two page hand out that will give you the basics on the DIAD and hopefully will help your limp though.

Second option is to go in the center and take a CD Based computer based training. This will take longer and the likelyhood of them seeting it up is very low this time of year.

You wont find anything on UPSERS.

UPS is very private with what info they give out about technical products they create.

One of the Tie Guys!

Hi guys,

Don't know if your questions were answered yet, but I can definitely point you into the right direction.

There is a ton of information which can be accessed generally from any workstation in a center building.

Click on Technology in the left hand menu, then CTSG in the following page left hand menu...

There you should see a link that says Project Notebook.

Scroll down until you see DCS acronym (DIAD Control System). Once that page loads on the top framed menu you will see a link that says Documentation. Within that page there is a TON of reading material for DIAD IV, III, and II (if anyone is still using II i'll be surprised).

It is very buried, but if you take the time to print out a few documents I believe it will help you tremendously in regards to your PEAK Helpers. It always helps to have a manual.

I HAVE THE SOLUTION--

All DIAD materials for DIAD IIIs and IVs, including DCS procedures are located on UPSers.com. Go to the main login. Look to the right under "Quick Links." Select "Everything DIAD." Then when the page displays select the last link for "DIAD Procedures." This takes you to the I-Gate login. After logging in, the DIAD Procedures page under POSG will open. All DIAD training and user materials are saved in these folders.

Open the folder for "Peak DIAD Procedures and Helper Training." The "Made Simples!" and all training manuals are available for viewing and download. These are the materials used in the helper workshops. There is also a folder that contains all the "Made Simples!"

These materials are not accessable by the general public, but every center should have access to I-Gate. If you have any problems accessing these materials please email me back.

Hi

I tried looking on upsers.com for the diad materials mentioned above but couldn't find them. Maybe they're in a different spot since they redesigned the website? Does anyone know the new location on upsers.com or did they take them off the site?

Thanks :)

Not sure what you're looking for, but search "Everything DIAD" at upsers.com.

The DIAD is not that hard to learn, especially for the basic deliveries that most helpers will be making, and you would be an asset to your driver if you knew how to sheet pkgs. Our center manager usually requires that at least 25 stops be in the helper DIAD. My helper was able to do just about any delivery that I asked him to, including commercial deliveries, except for CODs, which should always go in one board. It's really not that hard.

Hello all. I would also like to get some more proficiency on this device even though we did have a quick session during the initial orientation yesterday. Since I officially start Monday (well, they said if they need us they'll call in the morning) as a seasonal driver helper I don't want to slow down my driver in any way that I can avoid. Once l get my employee number (along with the safety book, time card and new uniform that I bagged up on Friday) will that allow me access to the UPSers site mentioned, or no?

Thanks for the help.

Your use of the DIAD will most likely be limited to driver release and basic commercial deliveries. You will not be delivering CODs as these need to stay in the drivers' DIAD. Your driver will download the package detail (EDD) before leaving the bldg and you simply scan, big arrow down, and then either driver release or get a signature. You may need to put a suite number, apt number or letter in to the room number space but, other than that, it is fairly basic and will become 2nd nature for you.

Most of us have not seen a DIAD III since last Peak so it may take us a few minutes to get oriented.

Thank you. I appreciate your quick response.

Hey Upstate,

Although completely unrelated I wanted to mention that I enjoyed (and have to agree with) your replies to the Chicago poster looking for answers regarding Internships.

Sadly, it seems to be the way of things with a great deal of young people these days. Their lack of basic common sense seems further complicated with either a substandard education, or an inability to hold a decent grasp of rudimentary fundamentals in regard to general business.

As detail oriented as coding tends to be, I can only shudder to think of the critical errors that anything written by that person would contain in their programming. Although a proficiency in spelling is not essential to writing programming code, it is quite beneficial. Besides having a tendency to be less buggy it also does illustrate the mindset of the individual and their good habits when forming any serious structured, intelligent, detail-driven thought.

Furthermore, the inability to utilize common tools readily available to offset a glaring weakness (such as spelling) when requesting help and advice seems like youthful arrogance (or perhaps it is simple apathy). Once he ignored your advice for what you were trying to give it seems to have turned into a series of insults.

Regardless, I think TechGrrl was dead on in her responses right along side of you as well.

Just my two cents as an old IT Executive Professional. Thanks again.

You don't need to know how to use DIAD if your just starting monday. Your not going to help your driver out becasue you actually need to use the DIAD to get good at it and with only 19 work days left before X-mass it is going to be easier and faster for your driver to just scan the packages and have to be the runner.
