If the young man has his heart set on being a UPSer. He should give it a try. At his young age we all had our own goals and dreams, yet we ended working for UPS. His mind might change as he matures.

Its in the best interest of all, to have young energetic people with a good moral work ethic in order for this company to continue to maintain market share.

LOL!!! rainbow chaser!!!

Without work ethic, you have nothing.. College, I do not think that is me.. I do okay in school, I have never made a D or friend on my 6 week average,, I just don't know what I want to be.. I like firearms, but no jobs really fall completely what I want.. I wanted to be a truck driver, Market research analyst, 5 star motel manger, gunsmith, butcher, and finially back to truck driver without being over the road,, My money goal is 50k a year (in todays standard, more in the future as prices go up) and to be home every evening.. So, I can continue with hobbies I like.. I was always told, "work a job that you love and enjoy and you will never have to work another day in your life"... The first thing that came to my mind was PORN STAR,,, That is not a joke, that was my first thought.. But, that is only a fantasy .. LOL!!! LOL!!!
Seriously, I don't know what I want to be,, I know I do not want to go to college.. That would be 2 or 4 years sitting in a desk doing work that later gets handed back and throwed into the trash.. However, if you guys could recomend some jobs, maybe under my guide lines or with computers?? pay around 50k would be awsome, and without going to college... HEY!! what about fed-ex??

Maybe ... look forward to working with you and Jesse and Kermit. :wink2:

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
and someone believed it,
and look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell,
we know that it's probably magic....

Have you been half asleep
and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

"Hang in there!"
My advice to you would be look into the military if you don't want to go to college. You can choose a career path and get paid while you learn it. If you decide the military isn't for you, you can get out after your enlistment is fulfilled. If you decide you should have gone to college the military has the best programs for colege tuition reimbursment/savings. The military will teach you self discipline and respect for others and yourself. If you start working for UPS at 18 you will have several or many years of doing the part time deal without ever having a promise of obtaining the driving job you desire. If you have a military enlistment with experience driving you can get out and be ahead of people that have no experience. I have a son and if he doesn't want to go to college I'll try to steer him toward the military. Not to mention, if you start at UPS at 18 you will have to give them at least 40 years of service if you want to make a career of it. You could do 30 in the military and still get a job at UPS. But right now all you should be thinking about is getting your driver's license and having fun with your dudes. Don't try to rush life because life is rushing at you. You just don't realize it yet. Have fun and be an irresponsible 15 year old. This is the only chance you're going to get to do it.

the catch is that if he doesn't like the military , he'll have to wait two years to get out. If he doesn't like ups , he can quit. and then he go into the military with all those muscles built up from lifting packages at ups. Army will take you up to age 42. Last time I heard , it was up to 28 with the marines.

I think it is pretty cool that a 16 year old is thinking about his future. And if he got his heart set on this. Let's not discourage him too much. I can just imagine if he went on an internet chatroom populated by current and ex military. They would probably say go to college or get a job at ups but don't enlist.

thanks so much pickup. man you hit that right on the head.. My first fourm was truckingboards... I told them I wanted to be a truck driver.. They told me about the endless hours, high costs, and bad relations with my family.. I then asked for a list of good local truck driving compaines.. The first one they recomended was UPS or to become a electrician.. So, I went to this fourm.. You guys tell me to go to college or the millitary (both in which I don't think are for me)... Later last night, I logged into a Commerical Electrician fourm.. They told me it was too much work for to less pay.. I brought up truck drivers, and then they recomend that to me.. LOL!!! I want to be in a trade.. I will be going to tech school, so any highly paid trade would be more me.. But I thank all you guys for takeing the time and talking with me..

If I were you I'd entertain the idea of a career at UPS by starting off part time and using the tuition assistance to help finance some sort of education. You'll get a taste of the big brown machine and decide whether you can put up with it for the rest of your life. When you turn 18 you'll be too young to drive at UPS anyway so you might as well start off and accumulate some seniority and experience.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with finding a trade. Look into crane operating, HVAC, etc.

It would be my feeling with computers, the only jobs related to that field that should stay in the u.s are the jobs where the guys do the actual wiring between mainframes and computers and between the computers or who configure and maintain the land area network and/or wifi. Jobs programming computers are going to people in India who can write code and then transmit that code back overseas. To get a formal job in computers, you would need a degree; preferably one in computer science which requires some mathematics.

To be able to work with computers informally is always an asset to any job. No matter what job you are in, if you become the go-to guy when it comes to helping someone get around a software or hardware problem ( "did you reboot it? Did you plug it in? " Sometimes that's all it takes, heh, heh) , you will become more valuable to whatever organization you are in. My brother got laid off from his job recently with everyone else in his department only to be called two days later when the boss realized that my brother developed and maintained the company website .(my brother's actual job has nothing to do with the website he just enjoyed upgrading the crappy website they had when he got there and no one objected). Company might go under but my brother figures it is easier to get a job when he has one as opposed to not having one and if he can't get one, he , for the time being, still gets a weekly paycheck

You mentioned gunsmithing (I know little about this) but if it is something you are interested in, it can always be a hobby you can nourish and maybe one day make a job of it. I have no idea of the pay , etc, you probably have a better idea of this field than I do. We have one member here whose signature is "Find something you enjoy doing and find a way to get paid for it" . Sounds great, maybe that can work .

As for the rest of your schooling, contrary to what some posters have said here.(boobies, indeed covemaster) My pal Wayne Gretsky once told me something that might have been too late for me to act upon but I'll pass it along to you. He said " My father , Walt, told me "the harder you work as a kid, the more fun you have as an adult". " And if you don't know who Wayne Gretsky is , he was a hockey player who if he were as skilled in basketball as he was in hockey, he would have made Michael Jordan look like a little kid getting his lunch money stolen.

Whatever you choose to do professionally, basic math is important(know how to add ,subtract, multiply, divide , and how to know when you are comparing apples to oranges) and writing and reading skills will always come in handy . You write very well for a 16 year old. However, I noticed you used the word "recomend" a few times. Did you notice the little red line that appeared under that word after you typed it. Something was telling you that it was spelled incorrectly. At least twice now, you have not taken advantage of a learning opportunity. "Recommend" seems to be the way to spell this word. No red line when I typed it. Whenever you write something for others to read , in whatever professional capacity, some may not be judgemental if something is spelled incorrectly, they may not know. Others who do know might be and think it is a sign of lack of intelligence(it may not be but you are not helping them form a positive opinion. ) However, no one can help but form a positive opinion of you if they receive something that is well written, without misspellings. What do you think when you see a sign that says "We'll make you're signs here" hanging over a sign shop. Do you think highly of someone who would make such a sign(considering his line of work) and would you trust him with your printing or sign needs?

I probably rambled too much so I'll just shut my mouth (yeah, like that is possible)

Hey, I have been really thinking about become a UPS package car driver.. I understand you guys are union and that i may have to work part time as a package handler.. If I started out as a package handler how long would it take before I could be a full time driver??

I will be 16 in a few months, and when I turn 18 I am thinking about trying to join the terminal in Knoxvile, TN.. What would be my starting out hourly pay as a package handler??

and would they hire me??
Everyone has a differant hire rate state to state. Some friend/t drivers in a year, others like me took 10 years. Work at UPS long enough "part time" an you will see if thats your career or not, Trust me do it part time an see for yourself if its for you or not!!! I'd say go to school, but i'd also say get a p/t job at UPS an see if its for ya!!! They pay for school'n you know! Jus my thoughts 15 year UPS Employee

First, if you want to work, they'll probably hire you. For the pay, after the probation period, you'll get around $10/hr depending on the area/shift/position, etc.

As for driving, you have to be 21 for package cars, 23 for real trucks. Each center is different. It can take one year, or ten. You just have to wait your turn.

The key thing for you would be the tuition benefits. After you graduate, start at UPS, and enroll in tech school for some other trade like Electrical/Plumbing (elevator guys make a freaking killing). Then, if the wait to be a driver is too long, or you like what you're doing there, you'll have experience to join another union in one of those trades.

The point I'm trying to make is to always have a backup. Skilled trade union guys make as much usually as UPS drivers. You're in a position where you can still go after both.

UnconTROLLed

Start P/T at UPS, and goto school.

Get your degree, and work p/t 4-5 years, then you can probably start driving at UPS and make good money after a few years doing that.

If you like it, great, you can stay with that and be reasonably successful. If you don't like it, you can always fall back on your degree and start that path.

The key is working at UPS part-time to get years of seniority under your belt, so you will eventually get "your turn" to go driving.
