Terrible event.
Why is Biden saying the Federal Government (we taxpayers) will pay the full cost of rebuilding the bridge?
  • Reconstruction has hefty price tag: U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will "not be quick" and will certainly be costly. President Joe Biden also called on Congress to support recovery efforts and said he intends for the federal government to cover the full repair costs.
Serious question: Doesn't the ship owners have to have insurance?

Insurance payments will come. In the meantime, thousands of people are out of work and our economy is affected by the loss of trade. So rather than waiting for the insurance, the government has pledged to get the port back open as soon as possible.

What a freakin :censored2: he is. A ship that big hits a bridge, it's going down.
Some of the stories I've read were written by idiots.
Yes, the specialized crew who was driving the ship at the time were the Baltimore Harbor Pilots.
That's their job.
Yes, the pilot did follow the proper protocols.
Ships can not stop on a dime, they need a good mile to come to complete stop.
E=MC2 applies to this situation.
The bridge was poorly built, it had no redundancy built into it.

The bridge was strong enough to handle the loads it was intended for. No bridge is designed to handle the center span getting hit by a container ship.

LLoyd's of London Insurers is looking at a $3B loss.
Each shipping container on the ship is insured, along with the ship and the bridge.
Along with the closure of the port, delaying other cargo that were scheduled to arrive & depart.
