Interesting data compiled by Cornell University:

A poll by Cornell University's Suzanne Mettler found 44% of Social Security recipients and 40% of Medicare ones don't think they are using government programs.

That's probably because they all paid money from their pay checks for years into the programs, regardless if they wanted to or not.
There is little comparison of SS and medicare to foods stamps, welfare, low rent housing or many of the "give away" programs.
