James L. Powell, 23, of Philadelphia, received a four-year probation sentence after pleading guilty to theft and disorderly conduct for the incident.
Powell told authorities that on March 9 he was unloading a truck when he spotted an opened package. He threw the package, which contained a handgun case, into a nearby trash can and then continued unloading the truck.
Powell later took the trash can into the bathroom and removed the 9 mm Beretta semiautomatic pistol from the case and put it in his pocket, according to the criminal complaint.
