Interesting side note. everybody was so critical of Jimmy Carter for not invading Iran as a response to the hostage taking. Even Reagan publicly said: I'd send the Marines in there". Sounded good but when about a year after Carter left Newsweek got a hold of the intelligence briefing that resulted in trying rescue versus invasion. if we went into Iran so would the Russians. An invasion would have been spearheaded by airborne troops but because of the extreme difficulty getting armored divisions in there to support them with the most likely outcome being the hostages slaughtered and the 82nd airborne would be wiped out in 37 days. Saber rattling and chest thumping will only get you so far in today's world . Sometimes in the world of politics you get your bluff called and have to put your balls on the anvil.
