Is Brotherhood and Solidarity Dying in America?

IMHO the instant gratification generation is incapable of having the overall patience it takes to truly understand and embrace the union work ethic. nobody really cares or thinks about the guy next to him anymore and nobody thinks long term. there is so much going on now that its basically information overload and everything happens at the speed of light. they younger generations see something today that might not be there tomorrow and grab at it because its a rapidly changing world for them. the union work ethic of a slow and steady 30 year grind, where you bond with your brother workers in the pursuit of a common goal i believe is an unfathomable thought to them. not there fault mind you, its just a changing world.

If you're talking about baby boomers I agree.

Their is no nation anymore America is a vast empire where many of our supposedly conservative voices literally argue that foreigners living in other countries are "true Americans" because America is just an idea. My oldest child was born in the first year where he will be a minority in his own country and the feckless baby boomers are only concerned with the government continuing to buy several billion dollars of housing every month, *month*, to prop up our zombie banks and their home equity.

Solidarity? Solidarity with what? There's nothing to support anymore. We get to inherit the world of sociopathic individualism and me first. It's the gift the worst generation to ever live has left for us.

Of course nothing will stop them from narcissistically putting down their own children and grandchildren. They don't even have enough empathy and cognition to realize that they raised those children and bare a large chunk of responsibility for how they turned out. There's something seriously wrong with the boomers. They don't support the next generation they compete with them.

im talking about all generations that grew up after the demise of the common union blue collar factory job in America. the auto plant, the tire plant the airline plant, the mill or the factory. i grew up hearing about and knowing about what a union job was. my mom was a rosie the riveter in a union aircraft factory for years. she got me in right after high school and i was making more money that my sisters who where a nurse and a teacher. my sons generation did not grow up around a strong union community like it still was in the 70s and 80s.

I grew up in a strong democrat union family. I learned that you work hard and take care of your own. I tried to instill the same ethic in my three children. I may have been a little easier on them than my parents were on me, but today I am happy with and proud of all three who show the same work ethic as their forbearers, all gainfully employed and doing fairly well although it sometimes is a struggle. I like to believe my example rubbed off. I have been working 2 jobs for twenty years. Although I feel that the democratic party has abandoned our kind.

Ayn Rand, capitalism, individualism. Socialism as a dirty word. What do you expect? It's not about how hard you work, it's about how lazy your neighbor is. It's not about what good can your taxes do, it's about your taxes not helping them brown people. There is no common good. There is no country. "I'm living in America, and in America you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business."

Here we go. The old men blaming the young people again. You know who's cheerleading the most in my building for a Yes vote?

The old guys that will be retiring soon. They see that their pension will be better funded with these crappy 22.4 jobs and don't care about anything or anyone else. So before you blame the kid making $15 a hour for wanting a FT job. Blame the old man that already got his and is willing to sell out the people after him to get more.

Funny how people are talking as though this ridiculously selfish individualism and ignorance is worldwide, its still an American/western thing. That belief in itself shows ignorance to the rest of the world.

Its the American way. In 20 years you will understand. You are just in the “world owes me a living” stage of your life. After awhile you will graduate to the friend everybody else stage after you see the next generation after you crying “woe is me” constantly.

So which of these 10 points of fact regarding the pending Contract are just younger folks crying “the world owes me a living” and “woe is me”? What would you like current UPSers to swallow so your retirement might be better funded?

You are the ones in charge of your own future now. My generation of Teamsters fought for what they got (that was suppose to include a pension but we all know what is happening to those). If anyone is getting screwed its those who retired under Central States prior to 2008. I just don't see the majority of the current crop of Teamsters having balls enough to take it all the way to a strike. We will see.
