will they have any regrets or feel any embarrassment later over any of this. doubtful.
I guess the good news is they're not getting anything done that would cost us trillions more in deficit later.

Depends. The people rose up in Cuba and replaced a dictatorship with a dictatorship. Zimbabwe completely fell apart, so has Venezuela. Russia became the Soviet Union which fell apart. George Orwell's "Animal Farm" should be required reading. A lot of the time the people who lure the masses into rising up are using them for their own ends. "Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss."
We have a system that while not perfect allows voters to make changes and have a peaceful transition of power. I'm afraid that we do have people in charge who see the era of American prosperity waning and they're determined to grab as much for themselves as they can while they can. And that's going to take us down roads we don't want to go.
