JCATS Question

Just $1.20 more an hour:( and only 20 hours a week. 3am - 6am mostly. And I have to unload a small plane. Is there some big plus I'm missing with the RTD job?

Very difficult to get FT in many locations. FedEx likes to keep RTDs part-time so there is little to no OT and maximum "flexibility". Get the training and then start looking elsewhere. Management will lie and say that you have to reimburse FedEx if you leave before a certain date. A lawsuit changed their minds about this, so you can bail whenever you want. Overall, much easier than courier, but some folks aren't cut out for big rigs.

Thanks for the info!

Well they told me I could go. Now the scramble to find a part time job that will let me leave for 3 weeks and come back.

Our stations RTD said tonight that if I leave before me year is up they will make me pay for school. Also he said 3 guys left them this year for a pro job. I guess no one has pressed the issue and just waited. Thanks for the Info!

My Sr. manager told me today that I don't have to get a degree for the security job with FedEx. That my 6 years as a cop would work alone. HR told me differently but I am calling to speak with the security boss hoss tomorrow. Maybe I will skip the RTD job all together. Not likely I'm sure lol

Just curious if you have experience as a cop. Why not get back into it? Out here in California they can make well over six figures and excellent benefits.

Here average pay is $35,000. You have to take tests with 2000 people and wait for them to reach you then retake every 12 months. Once you are off the list it is hard to get back with a decent PD.

Well police departments are always hiring out here. California may have a high cost of living but you can live pretty good on a six figure salary.

I hear that is the case in a few spots. I've thought about it before.

Well, they now will not let me take that job. I'm just sick of thinking about it now.

Anyone know anything about the security jobs in Memphis? I heard there is a uniform gig that pays $23 an hour. Doing that until I finish school would be awesome. There are so many freaking rumors and no facts with these jobs. I guess that is just the slow south...

Said they "have to" stick with the contract date due to peak coming up.
Nov. 9th was my hire date.

That is brutal. It probably would not change anything, but you can contact HR. Technically, the Sr. can make you honor your offer letter; however, he needs to offer a good reason. There is enough time to get someone else before peak though s/he may not match your production.

On the security position front. Your experience in LE will come in handy. The biggest part of the job is Loss Prevention, so they want to see plenty of investigations. Experience as a beat cop will count as next to nothing. The job is mostly to prevent employee theft. I had a guy with a solid background that they wanted to go back to a department store or something and get LP experience before truly considering him.

It isn't just CA that pays well. In AZ the COL is pretty low and police make 70K+ depending on OT. As a security specialist, depending on your market and how much experience they would count, you would hopefully start at a pay grade 25 and make around 57k. Raises would come almost never.

RTD drivers are leaving in droves because once they meet their requirements they go work for companies that pay them what they are worth.

It is what it is. I'm sick of thinking about it at this point.

I have a good bit of investigations experience. Took all the FBI classes like most cops have the chance to.
Was the guy you spoke of already employees with FedEx?

I can only hope already being employed with them will give me an edge. I know I'm not the only one but I bet there can't be too many current fedex guys with 6 years LE time and that is willing to move. If they are retired and working at FedEx chances are they won't want to uproot and move at that point. If they got fired then I doubt fedex would take them. (I started a business and left LE, then lost the business lol).

Oakland, Richmond. LAPD. High problem areas pay big bucks, but so do some upscale suburban communities. Great job dollar-wise, but high burnout factor and not great for your family life. Single? Could be a great career.

Definitely not the career choice for me. But the OP has a background in law enforcement and wants to get in security at FedEx. Law enforcement in California is high pay, excellent benefits, and in high demand. FedEx on the other hand, is the complete opposite.

Yes, he was. HE was former MP and had a little investigation experience. He was never an actual LE officer though. HE felt like FE did not want to hire an internal candidate.

My advice to you would be to contact a local security specialist and tell him (cause it will be a guy) your background. I have no proof, but I feel that in most of these locations they are hiring externally and know someone in local LE that they want to hire.

There are some low-level security positions, too. I have no idea if they promote from those positions to the nice corporate security jobs.

Yeah some of the higher paying PD jobs have been appealing before. I guess I'm just tired of the monkey suit. Moving for a street officer job isn't very motivating. Big cities recruit here several times a year.... Almost went to border patrol once.

I actually spoke to our Sr. Security Specialist. He said I have a chance already being with the company. They would have to have a good reason to outsource and not promote from within. The HR guy told me 6-7 months ago that only exempt experience will convert to the years of education needed.

After speaking with our Sr. S.S. I searched in the FedEx system for actual rules in the matter of education. I was surprised and delighted to find that non-exempt will transfer 2-1. Also that 30 completed hours of education counts as 1 year. You only need the full Bachelors or 2 year when it says "completed bachelors". For accounting and engineering type jobs.

15 openings in the security field will be posted soon. Depending on the market Security officers make $46,000ish, Security specialist 1 makes $54,000ish, 2 makes $62,000ish, 3 makes over $73,000. The goal is to reach Sr which could be over $100,000 depending on the market of course.

I will try for as many openings as I can. I assume with that many opening movement will start all over the security board. Hopefully I will get in there some where.
