Knee pains

On a slightly different note. Im 20 years old and have been pre loading for a couple months. Being a driver helper would be even easier for me.

And I am pulling things 70+ lbs off the bottom belt often. I can typically lift anything below 110 lbs without help. Asking for help every time for something over 70 would be ridiculous.
You seriously can't say that a 140 lbs guy asking for help on every 70+ is ridiculous because your 280 lbs buff bodybuilder coworker can do 120 lbs without asking for help. The expectations for job requirements is up to 70 lbs.

People were saying that pre loading is a very difficult job. Not really. The drivers seem like the ones with tough work. Trying to beat the clock delivering packages, getting yelled at, working long hours outside. Most of all, I only had to move 70lbs from the slide to the truck. How many feet did the driver have to move it when delivering?

Depends on what difficult is. As far as being a driver helper, for me, difficult is heavy stuff. For some, its working the DIAD.

Some might say that getting in and out of a package car and rushing to and from a house 200 times can be pretty difficult... while at the same time focusing on your next stops.

I started driver helping right around... the beginning of peak I guess? - when they first started bringing on helpers this season.

They put me with a seasoned driver. This guy had been driving this route for a long time. He was 'older', but he could really run. I had to really try to keep up with the pace. After the first day, he got sick, but his cover driver was also quick. These guys are good.

It began on a Wednesday, and by the weekend... my knees were effing killing me. It was really bad. I had never considered calling into work before, but I really thought about it that Monday. I was getting sharp pains, particularly in my left knee. Eventually I got a knee brace, and I started taking Alieve twice a day, which helped a little, but I was limping around pretty badly. I was continuing to help this driver while they found him a good replacement helper, but we were on a different arrangement since I couldn't run anymore.

When I met him daily, I would deliver to his businesses (half of a shopping area), while he setup the truck as best he could, depending on how full it was that day. Then we would head off and do residentials. I would be the one finding, preparing stops, and setting up the truck, while he ran them.

Most of that was just a story I guess, but what I'm wondering is if any of you have had this sort of knee pain before, and if you ever had it checked out to find out what exactly was causing it. I spoke to someone who works in a medical filed, and I might have strained my tendons... but I don't know for sure because I definitely can't afford to see a doctor about it, as I haven't been with UPS for a year yet to get the insurance.

I had to stop helping for almost two weeks, as the pains were seriously affecting my work in preload. After that my knees got better, and they put me with a driver who was not so demanding.

EDIT: I should probably explain the pains more thoroughly. It felt like the bones in my legs hurt. Putting any sort of pressure on my knees gave me sharp pains. If I was to jump off of a step, I might have potentially collapsed to the ground, as my knees felt extremely weak. My left knee was about 200% worse than my right.

I have experienced the same. The pain I feel when I put pressure on my one knee reminds me of the feeling I had when I broke my foot. Sometimes I can push through the day but then I'll come across concrete steps that really mess me up for the rest of the day.

What these people don't take into consideration is that if you walk like they advise, you'll get weeded out and replaced with a person who is willing to run.

It amazes me how some people here are company butt kissers to the core. You may say "my knees will never hurt because I follow the rules and I'm not an out of shape slob like you." Be careful of karma.

I have bad knee pain due to arthritis. After much research I found a fairly new drug that works wonders for the constant pain and burning. It's called Synvisc-one. They are injections that last about six to eight months. I will warn you it's a very expensive injection that will cost you about $250 out of pocket. Find a knee specialist near you and inquire about Synvisc-one.

RE: to everyone here who said stop running.

Here's the problem... if you have a driver who runs... he is going to be very unhappy with a helper who doesn't.

Then just tell the driver where to put it. And also tell the driver that UPS specifically says not to run. I have very little UPS experience, just two seasons as a driver's helper, but I know how to avoid injuries and running to deliver a package isn't on that list. Last year my driver was the most driven, maniacal and effective delivery guy I'd ever seen. Never ran, but he sure could walk fast. Which is exactly what I did. He also had a bad knee because when he first started driving he'd jump off the truck. If your driver insists that you run, ask the supe to assign you to another driver.

UPS will always tell you. "You got hurt because you weren't working safe." They may tell you its because you didnt use your handrail, or its your shoes, or its your natural aging process. You use your knees more than any other part of your body. Wear a tear is wear and tear. You should ask yourself. "If we're an accountant would I be having these problems?" I can't use the handrail carrying 46 boxes of paper to the 3rd floor.
