Massive UPS Distribution Center Begins to Rise in Former Cradle of Bayonne Economy - Tap into Bayonne

With the rumble from the former military buildings settling, the first walls of a massive new UPS distribution center have started to appear.

Contractors imploded once-bomb proof buildings last year to make way for the construction of a distribution center, which is expected to create more than 1,000 new jobs.

The former Military Ocean Terminal which opened as a military base beginning just before World War II – and has since been renamed Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor – once was one of the larger employers in Bayonne. It’s closing in 1996, along with those of a number of other former local employers, caused many residents to seek employment outside the city for the first time. While its closure appeared to offer the space to bring many of those jobs back to, as well as a site for future housing development, suffered a setback when the housing market collapsed in 2008, causing lawsuits over previous contracts for development there.
