New center questions

Our hub went away and split into 2.

All our feeder runs were listed where they would be run out of and bid on by seniority. Even if you lived next door to the hub...you could be forced 40 miles away......this happened.

What happened to unassigned drivers and bid vacation drivers?
In general ones that wanted to leave for the new building could but they forced less than a handful of the lower seniority drivers to go to the new building too (where they bumped up the seniority list there and most then had bid routes).
It's not a perfect match because:
1) this was pre-Covid volumes and staffing
2) the old center was temporarily expanded (because of a total freeway shutdown/total reconstruction in the area) from the Livonia hub moving work there temporarily.
3) the Howell center also got routes (and drivers) from the Lansing center

So while some routes left for the new building. More routes came in. In fact too many to even park the cars along the belt. There were no unassigned drivers.

Drivers ETA's were regularly after 8:30pm (with them having to meet up or break route and return to the building and go back out) to get air back to the building before 8pm pull time. A rookie with pickups even showed up back after the feeders 1st pull time. Mgmt then started requiring everyone back by 8pm and simply used construction/conditions beyond UPS control to justify what just couldn't be gotten to. With those packages organized for an am delivery the following day.

The cars were triple stacked where only 1 should have been (where one was on the belt and two turned perpendicularly in front of that car) plus those were bumper-to-bumper all the way down to feeders area. It was like peak all year for a year-and-a-half (until the expressway was rebuilt) and they moved back to the Livonia hub--even had the rentals all year long. Some preloaders were doing 9 hour days on Mondays. Local sort was loading semis without sorting and sending it to the hub. It was absolutely ridiculous.

Needless to say more than one of the old drivers quit/retired. They posted bids for new drivers that went unfilled and had several outside hires. Building went through 2 center managers in 1.5 years. Mgmt sups were driving all the time. Part time air drivers were doing pickups etc.

When we had a new hub open up all route drivers had a choice to either follow to new location or bump lowest seniority driver (in this case utility drivers). Utility drivers signed a list for those wanting to go and left by seniority. We had more that wanted to go than they needed so no forcing was required.
