Obama: ‘It’s the Post Office That’s Always Having Problems’

I heard today that Congress will be bailing out USPS with $4B.

more taxpayer funds that will never be seen again

Again, more exagerated B.S. from right wing sources...

It is no secret that the post office, which is run by a board of directors, failed to plan for the future. Technology is killing the post office's viability as a company and this has nothing to do with the goverment of the united states.

Capitalism will be the cause of the postal service's ultimate death in the market place.

As companies make the switch to electronic billing instead of mailing out monthly statements, this revenue loss gets larger every month.

As more online bill paying services enter the market, customers are not purchasing books of stamps as in the past. This loss of revenue grows larger at a rate too fast to compensate for. Along with the rising cost of stamps, customers are accepting that they can pay a bill for free thru a bank and are making a decision to save the .44 cents for each bill payed.

Bulk advertising is down as the recession hit many companies hard and advertising dollars had to be slashed.

This being said, congress has an obligation to try and "guide" the postal board to do something to save the institution even though the handwriting is on the wall.

Major cuts, layoffs, buy-outs, hiring freezes will not save the post office as we know it.

Technology can not be stopped and it will replace the first class letter.

In a matter of a few short years, the us mail service will have to be privatized and all the carriers let go. It would eb cheaper to have a do-over and the role of the postal service will be to transport the mail to distribution hubs for private companies to deliver.

Its unfortunate, but its the future.

Shrinking revenues and high salaries dont mix well. There is nothing that the post office can do to battle technology's role in its demise.
