The OP and I were talking about pension.
My mistake, you quoted someone other than the OP and then quoted me that's why I responded to you as well. It matters not, for you are correct, that you can withdraw your money for hardship but can only withdraw half or up to 50k (as I've gotta mentioned) for loans.

Actually, you can----I believe the amount has to be $5K or less.

You can't take out a loan or make an early withdrawal from a traditional pension plan as you can with a 401k. Unless the pension plan states you can and I don't see any having that language as it wouldn't be in it's best interest.
