David Dinkins Deserved Better - His mayoralty was not the overt failure that it was​

I remember Mayor Dinkins through the lens of news coverage on broadcast TV and CNN.
He was portrayed by the MSM as a abject failure.
Too bad the MSM of today wasn't in place ... being a Democrat, he would be portrayed as a savior to all humanity.

David N. Dinkins, a barber’s son who became New York City’s first Black mayor on the wings of racial harmony but who was turned out by voters after one term over his handling of racial violence in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, died at 93 years of age on Monday night at his home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It came less than two months after Mr. Dinkins’s wife, Joyce Dinkins, died at 89.

Cautious, deliberate, a Harlem Democrat who climbed to City Hall through relatively minor elective and appointive offices, Mr. Dinkins had none of the flamboyance of Edward I. Koch, who preceded him, or Rudolph W. Giuliani, who succeeded him — and who, along with Fiorello H. La Guardia in the 1930s and ’40s, were arguably the city’s most dominant mayors of the 20th century. Indeed, many historians and political experts say that as the 106th mayor of New York, from 1990 through 1993, Mr. Dinkins suffered by comparison with the Gullivers bestriding him.

The great question when it comes to David Dinkins was and always will be: Should he get more credit? He was mayor of New York from 1989 to 1993, which meant he was handed a basically unplayable pack of cards on day one. The economy had crashed, taking the housing market with it. There was a glut of office space in midtown. Crack use was spiraling upward, chewing apart whatever social fabric had remained in poor neighborhoods after 20 years’ economic deprivation had already broken it down. People who are young now don’t remember this, but in that era, you were advised — seriously — not to take out your wallet in a subway station because someone might run by and steal it. (Keeping it in a back pocket was the mark of a rube.)
