The Constitution set it up that way so that large population center States could not dictate and dominate politics.
This is The United States Of America and the smaller/less dense population states would not have agreed to join the Union without the Electoral College electing the President.

I think I voted for Reagan back in the day. The Teamsters endorsed him. I like to think I vote for the man not the party. Definitely a large factor in trumps loss.
