United Way force donations coming soon for 2011.

aj is right--United Way merely collects and disperses the funds to it's member charities. Each charity has their own guidelines and, yes, it is quite possible that we make too much money to be eligible for their assistance. This should not deter anyone from donating as you are helping those who are truly less fortunate.
And by NOT donating to the United Way, but to the specific charity itself, you are cutting out the middle man and 100% of your donation goes to said charity.

:I the whole point of this post is not to support not giving to united way please do so if you can spare it your all right its a great charity. But its very disrespectful when the manager comes up to peoplwe and says " write down your donation and dont even think of saying no or else".

In years past I have not gave to United Way. I would just rather donate to a specific cause or charity. The sup would give me the "cmon man", Tell me how I can claim it on my taxes and such, call me cheap then go on to the next guy. I did however break down last year and do a one time donation of $10. I wish UPS luck in their goal for 2011.

In the end, what is the benefit of donating thru UPS payroll or your very own private donations ?
You can simply get United Way to debit your checking account every week, or month instead.

I understand thta some of you are so proud of UPS, that you'ld rather have UPS get the credit for handing them over millions each year.

Again, in the end, it only comes down to statistics when Charities, such as United Way, publish thier incomming donation numbers.
And, you'll even see a percentage of how much was corporate donated and how much public.

So, the question is, does UPS even match 10cents to your dollar ? And if not, what is the big benefit donating thru them ?

UPS matches 15% of the donation for each employee. This was a change from the earlier practice where they donated a flat dollar amount per employee. The year this changed, it equated to a reduction of the of the donation by UPS compared to the prior year. This change took place 4-5 years ago. The charitable organization receives 15% more if you donate through UPS compared to donating directly to the United Way.

Think of everyone you know that works at UPS. How many of them would donate to the United Way if they didn't work here? The other thing I used to get from employees was, "I donate to something else in my own time." Well so does everyone else. There isn't a week of my life that I don't get asked to donate to something. So should I quit donating to the United Way because I donated to the diasbled veterans fund last week?

By donating to UW I am able to give more than I would as the money is taken out weekly.

I am currently at $25/week and plan on going to $30/week this year.

Lol upssocks stop faking you know how UPS force us to donate. The center manager is a close friend and told me the reason why they try to force as much money as possible from employees. Each center in the building is given an amount to come up with. If they dont meet that amount the center manager and FT sups of that center must dish out the remaining balance no matter how much is left to complete. Sounds really democratic if you ask me :I

Thats what we have been told the other year... the center missed thier quota on UW donations !

What the hell is that ? They got numbers for that, too ? Sure seems like it, and it's true, too !

I am currently "donating" an amount decided by court to my ex-girlfriend. Does that count?

There is a city of Willoughby Ohio and the train tracks do run thru it!!!
Is the funeral home named Willoughby and sons?

Oh boy, where should I start... Managers and sups are not asked to dish out the remaining balance. The United Way is so much higher up than us. I've heard of District Managers making healthy contributions to cover a quota but not Managers and Full Time Sups... One more thing. When was the last time UPS hasn't made their United Way goal????

A goal that will be met through coercion, intimidation and cheating. Yeah, sounds like the UPS I know.

To the people that do not donate..... I HOPE YOU NEED THE UNITED WAY ONE DAY.

Here say only BUT.....
.
.I was told by several drivers that during the 97 strike they went to the United Way for help and were denied due to UPS's HUGE CONTRIBUTIONS.......
.
I personally donated $10 weekly and yes designated it going into a childrens cancer fund UNTIL management pressured me after 4 or 5 years to increse to 20 or 25 stating hey you make x-amount an hour you can afford it.........and the pressure continued daily until I scaled it back to $2 weekly for a year and I was told ok you made your point , Now can you go back upto 10 or better .
.
at that point I took out a sharpie and made a big fat 0 on the form.......

SERIOUS QUESTION..........
.
.
WHEN WILL YOU GROW UP AND STOP BEING A D...HEAD ?
.
I am not saying that NFP org's like united way and habitat are not good causes , but I have done more than my share of volunteering bothy in my community and in the hellhole I worked in for 8 years . To be pressured to donate year after year is annoying . I have cancelled checks of over $1000 a year for the past 10 years of donations to individual organizations and charity's ! THE PRESSURING DOES TAKE PLACE MAYBE NOT IN EVERY CENTER BUT IT DOES HAPPEN.
.
I WOULD NEVER TELL ANYONE NOT TO DONATE , TO EACH HIS OR HER OWN !

thats one of those wonderful theories that does not play out in reality. most people would forget to send that check in each month. United way is a means to make that donation. They list the charities they collect the funds.

If your favorite charity did not have a united way helping them then they would not get anywhere near as much money funneled to them.

so much misinformation posted here. If you guys chose not to give thats one thing. but don't spread misinformation in an effort to disrupt an organization that is actually collecting funds and helping our community.

UW can't help everyone in the world unless you guys get off your arse and all become supporters of the uw. Until then those that need it the most will get the help. Instead of wasting so much time and energy creating excuses to be cheap you should actually look and see what they are doing. Then ask yourself how that charity will get all those funds if uw is not doing the grunt work.

My father in law was a good union man who planned out his retirement well and took care of his health. He and I used to horse around running foot races when he was well into his sixties.

what he didn't plan on was getting ALS. It destroyed him quickly. he was an invalid for five years before it took his life. In that time Mom took care of him at home. She needed a lot of help doing so and got it through the muscular dystrophy association. Lot of special equipment , rides to the hospital for his medical visits etc.

When I give I'm not giving to united way, I'm taking advantage of the convience to give through them to the muscular dystrophy association. When the labor day telethons are on I'll be right there with tears in my eyes thinking about that poor man suffering those five long years in that wheel chair and praying no one else ever has to go through what he went through.

I don't how long its going to take to take for those doctors at muscular dystrophy to find a cure for all those god awful diseases but I do know it would take them much longer if they did not have organizations like the united way organizing and collecting those funds for them.

If you want to deny united way then thats your choice but maybe just maybe you should go down to the local muscular dystrophy organization and ask them what uw does for them before you discount all they do.
