UPS Spent Nearly $1.2M Lobbying - Forbes

United Parcel Service Inc., the world's largest shipping carrier, spent nearly $1.2 million in the first half of 2007 to lobby the federal government, according to a disclosure form.

considering the return on investment and the amount of revenue this company takes in, i'd say this is a great investment.

This money comes directly from the pockets of managers and supervisors. Every year, UPS solicits for contributions to this cause.

The Teamsters probably spend far more than that padding politicians with DRIVE money. I'm glad I quit wasting money on that.

I assume the $1.2m is the contribution made by UPSPAC. And as LPGuy says, all management (and specialists I think?) are asked for a voluntary contribution each year.

This is a critical operation for the company. Without proper representation in Washington, DC, companies like UPS would be dead in the water. And as one of the other contributors mentioned about the Teamsters-- while UPSPAC generates quite a bit of contributions from the management team each year, it's nothing compared to the PAC the Teamsters have. While one may disagree with company activities, if one is actively employed by the company, then it behooves him/her to support this activity (in my opinion).

With corporate PACs, at least the company solicits contributions from management for the purpose of political activity (this is clearly spelled out in all the forms/videos). For the Teamsters, I believe it is from union dues--hence, its membership really has no choice but to "contribute" to the PAC. There was an Executive Order (or something like an Exec Order to put into place a law that was already supposed to be in effect?) in early 2001 after President Bush came into office I think that said that union members had a right to ask that their contributions not be used for political purposes--it was promptly protested by the IBT of course.

why the hell is that the responsibility of managers, not the corporation or the corporations operating revenue & profit?

TylerDurden-
I just guessing.....are you in management?

He must be. The DRIVE money I was referring to doesn't come out of union dues. Its taken out of Teamster paychecks separately. Usually, the IBT gave the money to politicians I voted against, so I got out. My Local used to give out the "fifty-two dollars caps", which is what we called a DRIVE baseball cap.

Well...that is the $50,000 question now isn't it? I'm not a campaign finance expert--though I'm sure McCain-Feingold probably didn't help it, but I think the FEC regulations prohibit direct action by the corporation itself (hence...the "voluntary" contributions from management).

As for "You must be management...". Guilty again.

I asked because your comments have a vein that portrays the poor, poor company and the evil union that is out to destroy it.
If the company had its way, we would be making 10-15 dollars an hour. I direct you to observe Fredex as an example. These "contractors" are a creation of Fredex. I don't think the employees woke up one morning and said, "Gee......I think I will be a "contractor" without any benefits etc. today".

If the company could figure out a way to move the operation to Mexico, they would do it in a heartbeat. BUT WAIT!!.......now that our famous government (who seems to be rather cozy with big business) has opened a mainline highway for our "compadres", from south of the Rio Grande to "hot foot" it through our country in unsafe trucks, it probably won't be long before the Mexicans start pulling our loads.

The Teamsters are in Washington also. What are they doing?.....simply countering what the comapny is trying to screw us out of.

If you think the company loves you and would miss you and the operation would seriously suffer when you gone.....you got another think coming.
