not sure about that . the vietnam model as well as the afghanistan model is putting our troops out there in camps as bait to draw the enemy too them. John Kerry was a classic example. Rode a river boat in nam for 6 months where he was rarely in harms way. Had a fire fight where he charged a half dead cong dying on the river bank Had his elitist buddies in the upper echelons nominate him for some medals and then left to become a political figure . I respect that he went and served and put his ass out there. I despise him for the fact that he was able to choose the time and place he could leave.
In WWII everyone stayed until they either were severly wounded , died or won the war.
