What would you be doing if not driving for UPS?

Folks get it in their heads that they're somehow indispensable.
The job is a grind. UPS does not care about us personally. We are just meat in the seat. Having said that, there’s nothing more automatic then getting some decent seniority and coming to work every day and making six figures at this company.

It’s so mundane I think some guys get bored.

Yep, like they subconsciously want to spice things up!

Haven’t really seen anyone lose their job for just a claim for management without some serious evidence. Matter fact, I’ve seen the majority of people who’ve had an unreported accident get their jobs back…… eventually I suppose it depends on the strength of your local union.

I would say this job is very difficult to get fired from unless you’re doing things you absolutely should not be. Yes there’s a lot of harassment, but it usually goes nowhere. Especially if you file the appropriate grievances.
Once again, depends on your local. Some are for sure not representing!

I think about this a lot while I’m driving around and going into different places and business. I started doing this right after I graduated college and have been at it for about 5 years. I kind of regret not gaining any real skills. Don’t get me wrong I know this is a very good job but if I ever found myself in need of another job I wouldn’t know where to look. What would you guys be doing if it wasn’t for UPS?

I was supposed to be a history teacher. Got my B.S. in secondary education. Couldn't find
a teaching job out of college. This is 1975. Had a buddy working at some new little 15 state
company called UPS. Said he needed some Christmas drivers. Yeah sure. I can do that for
a couple of months. 32 years later......

I was a gunman for the FDIC, actually for a security contractor.
In the 80s, when all the banks were being shut down, we'd accompany the FDIC guys into the bank, they'd basically take it over and shut it down, then inventory everything.
It was fun, walking in and taking over, but then boring as we pretty much guarded the place for several days. I can remember being on the fifth floor of a Boston building posted in a hallway with a window at one end. Looking down, I could see rats running around in the alley..... Five stories up, those rats were huge!
