Kind of misleading story. The cops shot AT him 36 times but how many times did they hit him? Apparently enough.

What a great idea, become a victim of crime and get secured U-visas.
The nonimmigrant status is intended for for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity.
The visas would allow recipients to qualify for work permits while the case is being resolved.
Would have worked, but then a good guy with a gun showed up.

Somewhere out there are NGO sponsored advisers, or intelligence agents from countries like Venezuela, providing these loopholes.

Saw a case in Chicago where a Venezuelan about to be deported, got to stay because he was able to dig up a police report from a crime he was involved in 16 years ago. Seems unlikely he would dream up this tactic, with broken English and limited knowledge of the courts and laws.

Some group out there, really want certain individuals to stay in the US.
