Sammy: I'd really like to know what that building security escorted a retiree out of. If it happened, may be a little more to the story than that!

I worked out of the Denver, Colorado facility. And I think a big
part of things is a change in the work culture.

And not just for a retiree, but also for people who have resigned.

Don't know about the drivers, but for those in the offices -

Once upon a time you gave a two week notice and you worked those two weeks. And on your last day, you hung out and said your good byes.

Now when you give notice, that day is often your last. I've received e mails from people I didn't even know were leaving who said so long because they weren't given the opportunity to make the rounds and say good bye.

Perhaps it is felt that these folks might spread negativity if they wandered about on their last day, that would be my guess.

No juicy stories here, sorry.

We had similar situations here. I would tell upset employee that the safety committee cannot force management to give out safety awards/gifts. Then I would tell the employee that if they received a postcard in the mail from the awards company to call the phone number and share their story with the awards company. Usually the award finds its way to the employee soon after.
I am darn proud of my yearly safe driving award, and like many UPSers look forward to the recognition. It is an honor and a personal achievement to have a year of safe driving. It is mind boggling to think of the good decisions, and safe driving habits, that an UPSer has used trying to deliver packages with time commitments, customer expectations, inclement weather and management's production standards in a years time.
I am bewildered that comfort for being forgotten on such an important safety anniversary, is to console oneself with above average pay and benefits.

"We stress safety throughout our Company. The safety of our people and of the general public is of utmost importance to us. By meeting our own high safety standards, we will be contributing to the well-being of our people, our company, and the communities we serve." -UPS Policy Book

I hear ya.
I got my last three safe driving awards with no recognition. I had already ordered my cheap gift before it was given to me or left on the counter anyway. You only get good stuff at 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. anyway. Dont get their fishing equipment. Unless you are only catching blue gill , they break easily. I got a camera. the Olympus, digital. (dont get it), it doesnt work well in cold or heat, or in a hurry. Other than that its OK.
I got a telescope for my 20 yr service, which I was being paid to load my own truck when it was presented. And its always dark when I get home so there is a real usable gift. Maybe they should offer night vision goggles also.
My 11 yr safe driving we had a box of donuts with our names written on it. I got my certificate and pin off the table beside the donuts. , I ordered both my gifts this yr, since I didnt think about it last yr. I got my 12 yr, at 8pm, from the OMS who noticed it laying around in the office.
For all the preaching of safety, you would think...One day a month to recognize employees for all the above mentioned reasons from the original thread starter, could be possible. After all they send us messages all day about being safe, which yrs ago, they couldnt do. So we are, so we do, and it looks like its a big fing joke.
Hey I dont care anymore, anyway, my last stop is the most important. When I get home. We only work to live, we dont live to work, so we should be happy. I learned in college along long time ago, that money was not a motivator, recognition was. I always disagreed with my instructor. I still agree coz I know I wouldnt do this job for any less, and even WALMART congratulates their empoyees. Maybe UPS needs to relearn what they used to know.
And dont ever forget, that because of the wage you make, you to others and seems to be with mgmt also, are never allowed to be tired, hungry, cold, hot or frustrated, coz you make the big bucks and are lucky to have a job. No I have a job coz I do it, and I do it safe, and no matter what the numbers say, since they are so bogus, you get no complaints, accidents, you have no injuries, and you service your people, and are a good example for UPS. You act in a professional manner, and you get no Thanks for a good job, just coz you get paid. So on that note I assume mgmt should get no bonus? A bad ERI, YUP.

At one time I had a supervisor that shared the same birthday as myself. Over the years it almost became a game of sorts to be the first to wish the other a happy birthday. On the occasions he presented me with a handshake and recoginition award I knew he meant it as I believe he knew if he desired respect from his employees he would have to sincerely offer it in return.

While some might not believe that as prevelant today, I ask. What meaning can an award presentation carry if management must be chided or cajoled to perform it?

I probably work out of the same building Sammie did. I'm not terribly surprised Security would escort a member of management out on their last day--retirement or otherwise. If it was a p/t sup, I'd definitely understand. I heard a hilarious story a few weeks ago about how a resigning p/t sup on their last dayput a padlock on master control, shutting down the belt(s) affected. Ultimately the entire building was shut off because flow couldn't transit. Guy that told me the story said every friend/t'er he saw from that point on that night was purple from screaming!:w00t: . -Rocky

To wakyzachy - My hubby works out of Oregon Ave., although we now live in Magnolia, NJ. Is Lawnside any better? I keep trying to talk him into transferring to Lawnside but after 22 years he doesn't want to lose his seniority.

To satellitedriver - I am always happy when my hubby yells, "Hi honey, I'm home." It would just be nice for UPS to recognize the great job he does every single day. I know all about the pay and the benefits, and they are a wonderful plus, but my husband busts his hump every day, 12 hours a day so that we can live comfortably, besides representing UPS while he is working. I was just making a point that by recognizing your employees they will be happier and more likely to make UPS look better.

Yea they treat you so much better over here in Lawnside. Saftey is huge here so he would of gotten dinner or something too. Thats what they gave one guy last month. With 22 years they should beable to let him transfer with seniority. Ask around. Drivers always look happy when they get done their route. Less stressful here. :thumbup1:

Waky- I will mention to him again about transferring. At least it would help a little not having to commute 20-25 mins everyday and no small city streets all day. Although I do know that he loves his route, maybe this would take some pressure off him for the next 3 years and 4 months he has left.

For my retirement, my center team took us out to a local hotel and sprang for beer and appetizers. The bill broke the thousand dollar mark, but everyone had a good time. It was the same family spirit that made this company a great place to work, but there's less of that all the time. I still have my ID, so I can drop by and visit once in a awhile. How you get treated depends alot on your management team.

Our first few retirements the union kicked in $300 and the company kicked in $300 towards a party. Now there are so many each year no kick ins and no parties. When I retire I'll throw my own damn party. I'll invite all my friends. Should cost about $20.

Satellite-Three words a women doesn't want to hear, "Honey I'am Home".
Only because she hasn't heard the back door slam shut.
I always say "HI honey I'm Home" loudly, so "Jody" has a chance to slip out the back.
When I say those words, my wife always responds " And I'm glad you are."
Sorry, if you think I am being demeaning to my wife by calling her honey.
She is the sweetest thing that I have in my life.

On one's last day at UPS I find this latest touch kinda special.

Two people from security escort the person out of the complex as if they're on death row.

When I retired with 32years of service this is the way I left the building. They told me that it was the policy after 9-11.

Hello all! My name is Kathi and I am new to this board. My husband is a full-time driver for the last almost 22 years. I have a complaint and am wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue.

Why is is that UPS drivers, who work their butts off every single day of the year no matter the weather, or obstacles they face, can not receive their safety awards with a small ceremony to recognize a job well done. My husband had to take his 20 year safe driving award off the shelf himself because the supervisors say they don't have the time in the morning to recognize each and every person. Are you kidding me? These guys should be congratulated on a job well done, considering they spend 12 hours a day driving a large brown truck in snow, ice, rain, not to consider the traffic especially here in Philadelphia where navigating the streets is like being in the Indy 500. Come on UPS, maybe if you treated your employees a little better they wouldn't go home at the end of the day feeling disgusted and defeated.

Dissapointing to hear. Its not like this everywhere. I personally don't understand it. We as a company tend to focus on the negatives of the business so much that I would think your husbands management team would welcome the opportunity to speak about something positive. Of course it does require a little effort since someone has to take the time to order a cake or fruit basket. God forbid if we actually have to make the time to pick it up.
