UPS loaders describe working conditions and union-management collusion – World Socialist Web Site

Earlier this week, United Parcel Service workers voted by 93 percent to authorize the Teamsters union to call a strike when the five-year labor agreement covering more 230,000 drivers, warehouse and other workers at UPS hubs and air cargo operations across the US expires on July 31. UPS Freight workers, including over-the-road and city truck drivers and associated workers, voted by 91 percent to strike.

The overwhelming strike vote is part of the growing militancy of workers in the US and internationally. Since the beginning of the year, hundreds of thousands of teachers and other workers in the US have joined strikes and mass protests that have placed workers in increasingly direct conflict with the corporatist unions.

With nearly a quarter-of-a-million unionized workers, UPS is the largest unionized private sector employer in the US. The Atlanta-based company is also synonymous with speed up, workplace injuries and low-paid part-time labor, with workers often saying UPS stands for Under Paid Slaves. In the mid-1970s, UPS blazed the trail for corporations throughout America and the world with the introduction of a part-time casual workforce.

UPS says teamsters strike not imminent despite vote approval – Atlanta Business Chronicle

UPS expects that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will approve a strike authorization tonight, but says that the vote does not mean an actual boycott is brewing.

A spokesman for United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) told Atlanta Business Chronicle that the IBT called for a strike authorization vote related to ongoing collective bargaining talks, with the vote to be tabulated and announced tonight.

UPS describes this tactic as a common way to drive media attention and put public pressure on a company during negotiations. The Atlanta-based logistics giant also stresses that the strike authorization vote doesn’t give the IBT an ability to call a strike while the current national master agreements are in effect through July 31.

250K UPS union members teed up for massive potential strike – Fox Business

Strike authorization gives United Parcel Service workers’ negotiators more leverage in talks to replace a labor contract that expires at the end of July.

United Parcel Services’ (UPS) more than 250,000 union members have the option to go on strike later this year if contract negotiations fall through, which could deal a blow to the U.S. economy.

In a vote on Tuesday, UPS package members approved the right to strike by a 93% margin and UPS freight employees voted in favor by a 91% margin, thereby increasing their leverage in discussions.
