Nearly 100,000 people auditioned, but only 172 made it to Hollywood. From there, the top 24 — including UPSer AJ Tabaldo — were sent to the voting rounds.

After auditioning four other times and making it to the semifinals in Hollywood last season, AJ finally made it to the top 24 during this, his fifth time around. The top 24 consists of the 12 most talented men and the 12 most talented women. During the first week of voting, AJ sang Luther Vandross’s “Never Too Much,” and after America voted, AJ became one of the top 10 men on the show.

Originally hired as a customer counter clerk in December 2003 in the West Los Angeles District, AJ is now a part-time preload supervisor and plans daily routes on the Dispatch Planning System. AJ boosts morale through his vocal abilities and has even sung Happy Birthday to co-workers over the PA system.

AJ, who began his singing career at the age of five, says his mom and dad inspire him most to pursue singing and that they’ve always supported him in trying to make it in the music industry. He listed Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Stevie Wonder as some of his favorite artists.

In support of their co-worker, UPSers from the Santa Maria Center gathered at a local restaurant to cheer AJ on. Unfortunately, after he sang "Feelin' Good," by Michael Buble during the second week of voting, America voted to send AJ home, disappointing AJ, the judges, and his co-workers alike. Although AJ didn’t make it to the top spot, he now stands in the company of such talents as Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and Chris Daughtry — all “American Idol” runner-ups.
