Of course all technology is only a bandaid to what is coming, but you get my drift.

I'm not aware of any new diesel exhaust technology in the works yet. DPF's are definitely a bandaid and not practical at all for UPS's purposes. Urea aftertreatment is more workable but has its own drawbacks. If the EPA stands by its ever tighter standards, diesels in general will be what is obsolete.
