In the county where I live, which was named after Stephen A. Douglas, Demwits have taken over and now they are trying to rewrite history by saying Douglas county was actually named after Frederick Douglass.

Stephen A. Douglas (Democrat) was a well respected Senator from Illinois that fought to keep the Union together when Abraham Lincoln was elected President.
Douglas' birthplace in Brandon, Vermont has been memorialized as a museum and visitor center.
Numerous places have been named after him:
counties in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin.
Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, the cities of Douglas in Wyoming and Douglas and Douglasville in Georgia were also named for him.

This is the made up story by an Atlanta reporter and has no backup information/history to justify:
HISTORY
Name

The county was created during Reconstruction after the US Civil War when many African Americans were serving in the Georgia legislature, and was named Douglass County after the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, but the name was soon changed when Confederate Democrats regained power and expelled the reconstructionists.[3] They renamed it Douglas County (one 's') after Stephen A. Douglas,[4] an Illinois senator and the Democratic opponent of Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election of 1860. The existing historical marker makes no mention of the original name and says:[5]

The below is my addition:
The above naming account of Douglas county is contradicted by an exhaustive investigation by a local historian Lisa Land Cooper as detailed in this article:
Every Now and Then: Douglas County, Georgia was named for Stephen A. Douglas

Historical Marker:
This county, created by Act of the Legislature October 1, 1870, was named for Stephen A. Douglas, the "Little Giant," a Vermonter who was Congressman from Illinois 1843 to '47, Senator from '47 to '61, and Democratic candidate for President in 1860 on the ticket with gov. Herschel V. Johnson, of Georgia, for Vice President. Among the first County Officers were: sheriff T.H. Sellman, Clerk of Superior Court A.L. Gorman, Ordinary Wm. Hindman, Tax Receiver Jno. M. James, Tax Collector M.D. Watkins, Treasurer C.P. Bower, Surveyor John M. Hughey.
The county was created from the part of Campbell county which was northwest of the Chattahoochee River. The remainder of Campbell became southwest Fulton at the beginning of 1932.

Note: I live 7 miles from the old Campbell county, now South Fulton.
