Disabled after 90 days

I showed up. I worked hard. I worked well. I worked my wrists off. After just ninety days as a pre loader my wrists are so damaged I need corrective surgery on both my tendons. I give up, I quit. I didn't even file a workers comp claim, I just left. Im using my own insurance, but my hands hurt so bad I can't even lift a soda without being in pain. Im just another statistic, part of the four hundred percent turnover.
To bad, I thought I was going somewhere. I wasnt late or absent at all. I was employee of the month. The problem was the harder I worked the more work they kept piling on, until my body gave out.
I don't know how all of you made it through the warehouse to become drivers. I don't understand why they overwork everyone.
Well thats enough, "Goodbye UPS".

I've been doing this job for almost 27 years. Sorry, but I have to say perhaps your wrists were already weak. Find a job that is better suited for you.
This job is not for the masses. Apparently a strong will AND wrists is important. I wish you well.

As I have said before, strong back(and wrists) and a weak mind are all that is required. Monkeys could be trained to do our jobs.:crying:

The accumlative effects of this job is enough to break down/wear out any type of human tissue over time unless you're superhuman which some of our posters seem to be.
The strongest metal in the world will, if bent enough, break eventually. Because the joints, intervertebral spaces and other shock points of the human body are not constructed of the hardest metal in the world there will be deterioration.
We are not machines with interchangeable/replaceable bearings, hinges, bushings, slipjoints etc.

I agree, but after 90 days?

I feel for you but if your body fell apart after only 90 days it appears you went after the wrong job to begin with creampuff.

Sorry, but you are dead wrong about that one. A weak mind would give up after one day at this job. I don't know what position you are in, but a person that delivers or loads, or does anything else at UPS and actually cares about this job would not compare us to monkeys. Are you one of those that screws up all the time and is bored and bitter because you are too smart for the job but are still doing it? If so, take the big leap and use that superior mind of yours before your wrists and back wear out.

Rod first you say you feel for him and proceed to call him a creampuff?
This kid is obviously hurting, both physically and mentally.
He gave it a good shot and we all know how physically demanding the job can be.Everyone is different.Maybe ups aint for him but he tried.
I hope he heals and goes on to find a job that doesn`t hurt so much.

Sounds like carpal tunnel to me. You know, when you can lift 100 pds, but not a jug of milk kind of disability. You can learn to work with it, I have since 1986. You just overcompensate for lifting different ways, and try to keep the repetetive movements not so repetitive. Its all in how you flex. Different movements disable you. Your hands get numb in the winter and swell up in the summer, but its not so bad, and never ever have surgery. JMHO

I second that!

I don't think that there is any kind of repetitive motion problem that would arise in only 90 days. Maybe you're still conditioning to a job that is very physically demanding on your hands, wrists and forearms. And I share others skepticism about whether you are even a UPS person since absolutely no one calls their Hub or local sort a warehouse. We don't warehouse anything and no one ever calls their building a warehouse.

Excuse me Center, Hub, warehouse who cares. If you dont think I worked there.....

I follow the proper pre-load methods. Like "optimum carry", or "slide to car".

In the "package car" facing the front 1000's are on the top forward right shelf, under that is the 2000's shelf. The forward top left shelf is 3000's, under that is 4000's. FL4 is on the left wheel Hub FL3 is on the right wheel hub. RDL is rear door left RDR is rear door right. 8000's shelf is back left bottom shelf facing the front of the "package car". In the front of the cars there is a clear solid plastic compartment for Hazmat papers. The P.A.L. labels have numbers like this 0303-1800 which means car 303 shelf 1000's or stop 1800. H.A.B.I.T.S. Health, Athleticism, Body mechanics, Inspect, Tools/Equipment, Stretch.

Just because I have Carpal Tunnel doesn't means UPS is a bad company. Some try and discredit anyting said that is not positive about UPS. I am not even sure if my wrist were not damaged before coming to work there. None the less, the fact is I did work there. The work I did contributed to the Carpal tunnel. My hands freaking hurt, they hurt bad. Im not filing disability or workers comp. Im working elsewhere light duty. So whats the problem I am more bummed out then anything.

First off, I hope you get better from your carpal tunnel injury. What you mentioned about possibly being damaged before coming to work is probably true, since most all accounts ever documented about carpal tunnel is repetitive stress over long periods of time that causes inflammation and swelling of the nerves (I believe) within the carpal tunnel. It was a relatively unknown thing until probably about 50 years or so ago. Secretaries came down with it from typing. It also happens often in warehouse situations. When people do the same thing over and over. Often times a person will more likely get it due to being prone to it, just like some people are more prone to get a sunburn. I'm not saying that just because you are more prone to it you can't avoid it. What I am saying is that everyone needs to listen to there bodies and do what's best for their bodies. For some they may get heartburn if they eat spicy food. Stop eating it. For some they are lactose intolerant (stop eating milk products). For people of fair skin, wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible. For some there wrist hurt when doing repetitive injury. Try to reduce the wrist movement, wear wrist supports. Unfortunately for carpal tunnel, often times by the time a person really starts noticing the signs of carpal tunnel and takes it seriously the damage has pretty much been done and they have to seriously curtail what was making their wrist hurt. Which in your case is a job that has repetitive motion. If you were to ever take a job again with repetitive motion you need to be extra careful. Even if the next job is very different (for example sitting at a computer for long periods of time day in and day out. You could easily reaggravate your problem. You would be wise to follow your Dr's advice as to what to do, not to do and what supports to wear. Hope all goes well for you.

At UPS? Have you ever unloaded a truck? Do you have a clue what this job is about? Are you another superior mind that is so far above the rest of us that you don't know who makes this company run day in and day out? Perhaps you were just trying to ruffle some feathers. If so you did with me. I am sick and tired of those that don't give credit where credit is due. The backbone of this company is the real folks that get up and bust their butts day in and day out and then get stomped on by people like you who for some reason don't get it. Hell, for all I know you are some fat guy from Kansas who just got kicked off a porn site and was bored enough to show up here.

Those of us that have put 20+ years in this company may not like the way things are now, but I for one am offended when called stupid. We get up, we get there, and we make it work. Even when it would seem there is no way it can work. What do you contribute?
