Their response and it's a valid point is that it has a disproportionate number of highway miles to maintain which are subject to accelerated wear by weather conditions as well as the being the west to east transportation corridor.

they have turnpikes and toll roads that charge to drive on them. they pay people 25 bucks an hour to collect your money when automation could make it much more economical

The savings would be minimal compared to the size of the overall budget and imagine the crap storm if a computer glitch shut down the toll roads.
