driver tipping preloaders

Last year was my first year on the same route for any period of time. My preloader is great. He's the 2nd best preloader I've worked with. Me and two other guys got together and gave him $20 a piece. We might've been the only drivers on our belt that tipped. I got moved off that route after peak (I'm a cover driver) but luckily, got the route next to it with the same preloader. I'll probably up the $$$ this year. He's still a great preloader and I tell him often how much I appreciate his hard work. It's hard to find a good one nowadays and it's back breaking work for very little money.

When I was preloader some 25 plus years ago I never received a tip or gift from any of the drivers I loaded for (and I did a great job) of course we made a lot more money back when. When I became a driver after loading for 2.5 years I always tipped my loader, they have the hardest job at UPS. TRY TO ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SEASON, AND IF YOU TIP THE PRELOADER, YOU WILL!:happy2:
PS I did receive a gift from a feeder driver, a Xmas cactus, he gave one to every loader on the preload the year was 1978:happy2:

I always give my loader something for Christmas, usually the three drivers that he loads pitch in. Last year we gave him a gift certificate to a nice restaurant for enough money to actually buy dinner for him and his family.
Of course, he cares and works really hard to do a good job, unlike sooo many of them.
He is full time combo, Suppose there is a connection there?

If he's making top inside rate, he probably cares alot more than some thug hired off the street. I feel tipping your preloader is a very important thing to do if they're doing a reasonably good job, especially if theyre just a part-timer making a very low wage.

ok guy and gals, it is that time of the year when the preloaders need to know that they are doing a good job, well that is if thay are doing a good job. let them know by either tipping them or buying them something to eat or whatever, but just let them know. they will appreciate it very much. i know some drivers don't even know there preloaders, but if you have a good preloader take care of them as they try to take care of you.:happy2:

Due to PAS 50-65 lb packages are put on the top shelf of my truck. It's a dangerous situation and I've spoken to my loader to no avail. Management says it's not a safety issue since they are under 70. My preloader consistently places 0/70s that don't have 0/70 tape or stickers in my truck.

I don't think I"ll be giving him a tip.

my preloader should tip me...this joker has been sent down-state for hearings 3 or 4 times in the past year...this individual costs me a minimum of 30 minutes daily...and in a few instances better than an hour
there have been times that he's been given time off (unpaid week) for his exemplary job....I just wish they would move this person to the other side of the boxline (every driver runs 1+ hrs. early) so that they can deal w/ this incompetence

I had a preloader back in the early 90s that would load his trucks, (3 at that time) stop for stop. I felt like I was in heaven back then. All his drivers tipped him at Christmas. He earned it. Many of the loaders after his were not that great, but I still tipped them. My fellow drivers, please think about the crap they have to put up with. Most in my bldg went from having to load three trucks to four and then in some cases 5 trucks. They are pushed harder and harder all the time. I'm sure you've heard your sup tell you on many occassions to just get it delivered. They face the same thing. Most of the time they are told just get it in the trucks. They still work damm hard and deserve to be tipped.

While sometimes I would like to choke my preloaded I just remember the pressure they are under like all of us. They work crappy hours part time and don't get any of the respect the drivers do out on the street. I do pull out my hair and cuss them at times on route. Most try to do their best and work hard too. So yes I do buy a gift card for my preloaded and bring goodies. If they cause me extra work I make more money.

Lets work on getting the packages in the correct trucks and then ask for a tip.

I must have been real good, Started loading a drivers truck in September and for Christmas he gave me 50 bucks. Oh wait, I was good...:devil3:This was in the late 80's.........Stop counts within plus/minus 5. First 3 letters of persons last name on pkgs. p1000's loaded to the gills..No off routes, no buried airs, let me stop.

As a PT Supe, I appreciate it very much when my preloaders are recognized for their hard work during X-mas time. Be it in "green paper" or only in words. This recognition is hard earned. Thank you.

One of my drivers, the only one that is a full time (One of them is a seasonal and the other route is covered by a different cover driver each day) gave me a card with $25 in it today.

I tipped my Preloader this morning, it flipped him out. He has been working there several years and it was his first tip. We have a lot of tight wad drivers I guess. The Helper I worked with since the end of October pulled the third straight no show today. so I fired her and kept her tip. I had three different Helpers the last three days.

For the most part of this Peak, our volume seemed to be down and the Preload wrapped up on time. We just had a couple of days where we had a late plane or trailer. But today was different. Thousands of closed and hold packages were sent down my belt during the middle of the sort with no trailer or place to put them. When I got there at 6AM, the belt was backed halfway up with boxes falling everywhere. It was totally insane, the belt was buried. EAMS were light, so I worked the Preload for two hours trying to get it cleaned up. We has some big District Suits walk the belt about 7:30 and one of them said something like "What a clusterf***"! This same thing happened Thanksgiving. Seems like someone needs to learn a lesson here.

This is my second peak loading with the same drivers. They hooked me up last year and REALLY hooked me up this year. They are great people and make a crappy job seem worthwhile.

Its nice to get some appriciation..I don't care who you are.

As a driver the person that DIRECTLY affects you the most on a daily basis is your preloader.

I always tell my drivers.."if someone got up every day at 3am and loaded MY office...I would be nice to them"

As a whole though most UPS drivers that I have met, except for a very few, are really good and decent people..and that makes it a lot better.

Enough rambling...Merry Christmas to All.
