Your experience isn't the average American's. I'm an average guy who got reamed by his company and looked for alternatives that would give me a better retirement. It's not about keeping up with the Joneses in the States, it's about getting by comfortably with the resources I have.

I made the mistake of quitting FedEx after 4 years of no raises in 1997. Got rehired 1.5 years later and was assured I would top out in 7 years. 15 years later still $6hr from top out at $18.17hr. I hung in there for the pension which they terminated in 2008. Got 19 years on it on lesser pay. Took an accelerated pension at 55 in 2017 to get more for 12 years then at 67 it drops to almost nothing. So making the most of it here so I can get a nest egg together when my SS starts at 62. I'll try living in the States on my SS at 67 but if not doable I'll most likely come back to Argentina if it's still a bargain. Be thankful you worked in a company with a union. FedEx got it rigged so that we couldn't get a union in.

I'm 6'2" and for much of my FedEx career was 280-290 lbs. I looked like a football lineman. It was more about my diet that gave me diabetes. Ate a lot of fast food, drank sugar soda. I'm about 230 now but have also lost a lot of muscle. Used to pick up 150 lb crates all the time but can't do that now. 100 lbs maybe. I've got a bad lower back, bad knees that make steps hard, and bad feet that burn when I eat too many carbs.
My family helped me out with me staying at my dad's and my sister putting me on her family cellphone plan and letting me use a car. I paid them back by constantly running errands, doing chores, and giving my parents money. I still give them money but it's cheaper to live here than living in the States even with free rent and a free car. In the next two months I will pay off 4 credit card bills. Couldn't do that in the States.

I’ve lived, and our family has been fine, through multiple Presidents and various political parties being in control.

Why do you care? Following politics is a hobby. Pointing out to liberal Democrats how their party lies and cheats to maintain power is the cherry on top. And when libs try to discourage me I know it's because they don't have legitimate arguments so they attack personally. Prove the Democratic Party isn't a shell of its former self by pointing out all the current policies that are working well. Until then Democrats are more concerned about keeping power and changing the culture than in actually helping the middle class and working class have better lives.
