In the Wall Street Journal today, and they are no fans of the Trumpster, said that this whole thing about the national archive document could have been done with a subpoena. They could have subpoenaed what they believe Trump is holding and that they didn't have to raid his house.
But, even less intrusive, would to issue a subpoena that would have been to issue an order to show cause, which could have been filed in Florida or wherever they believed those records were being maintained. You go before a United States District Court judge and explain either, number 1, are you in possession? And if so, why are you unwilling to return those documents?"
But, a bulldozer came knocking instead.

they issued a subpoena and trump complied.
they then visited Maralago on june 4th and trumps people showed them everything.
In the middle of that visit trump popped in met with the FBI and told them to let him know if they needed anything.
they then answered trumps lawyers and asked them to put a better lock on a storage closet which the secret service did.
then the raid six weeks later.
oh crap I'm not supposed to call it a raid because its not astetically pleasing to them to call it that.
