Hey everyone,
So this may sound like I’m being a little bitch, but I’m very close to having a mental breakdown. I used to load 4 trucks and bag smalls for delivery, they bumped me down to three and now want me to load the delivery car because the prick across from me says he’s not going to do it anymore. I’m super stressed out and feel like I’m about to have a breakdown, unlike most people I take pride in my work and strive to give my drivers a good day, however my misloads have went up and load quality went down. I personally can’t handle that much work, and then I spend all day stressed out about my drivers day and start beating myself up, telling myself I’m not good enough to do this and I just go to a really dark place to the point where I want to off myself. And because I have a good relationship with my drivers, they tell me when they find a misload. So now I have to get calls and worry about this :censored2:ing place when I’m home and trying to relax. Is there anything I can do? I don’t want to go on FMLA but if this place is a major reason as to why I want to hurt myself, then what can I do? It’s getting to the point where I question my worth to the company and my worth to myself.

Hang in there it’s just a job. It’ sucks but the only way to get work taken off is doing exactly what you are doing. Showing them that you can’t handle it by getting misloads. It’s a stupid game you have to play with them. It is very important to leave work at work. I’ll say it again the only way to get less work is to fail at the job it’s the only way, otherwise they will just give you more work if your doing a good job. This is why so many people get hurt with this company. Do not risk injuries to be “good” loader. Most people I know that worked hard like that only got hurt and keep getting hurt and can barely do the job. Do not be that guy. Good luck.

The drivers don't have to call you when they find a misload. You are off the clock. :censored2: happens. It's not your problem. It's Management's problem.

It’s good you take pride in your work but your own health always comes first. You don’t need to make excuses to mgmt or the drivers for anything. If you can’t handle the work load they’ve given you just start moving slower and they will start to notice. Still keep trying of course but don’t work yourself to death for this company.

Always remember the words “I’m working as safely and efficiently as I can” if mgmt starts bugging you about speeding up.

What does it matter what we think of you if you want to take fmla or not. Talk to your doctor or specialist if you go to them for your anxiety/depression. They’re the ones who fill out the paperwork for fmla not us.

Also :censored2: this place (ups) shouldn’t stress about it. Good work ethic is great but I will never give 100% to a place that couldn’t care less about me.

It’s quite easy to get FMLA approved by a Dr. Mention the stress and say that it’s affecting your home life and sleep and at times you have been thinking of hurting yourself. FMLA is there for a reason. Get some help take care of yourself. Do not feel bad about it. Screw UPS they do not care about you.

Why would you let anyone call you about work? Work stays at work. If I walk into the building in the morning and anyone tries to have a work related conversation before I’ve clocked in, I tell them that I’m off the clock. I’ve never understood the drivers that show up 30 mins before their start time and stand around talking about routes or using the ORION computers just building that dread that they’re going to have.

You sound like you have a work ethic OP. UPS will either break that or take advantage of it like they apparently have been with you. You have to find a balance that will appease that feeling of doing a good job with the fact that it’s just a job that you’re doing for a paycheck. You might also try to transfer to Unload as it’s far less stressful.

It is a well known fact that UPS isn't for everyone.
They only hired you because some one else couldn't handle it.
Everyone here ( except for a few nutjobs ) has gone through similar experiences and many found ways to cope.
I used large quantities of alcohol as my excuse.
Others used different methods, each person has to find their own.
Killing yourself over a worthless job makes you a candidate for our Darwin Awards ( Current Events )

That may catch up with you about the time you retire. Sad.

The answers you seek aren't at the bottom of a bottle.

Sobriety helping.

Fmla is not company given or union negotiated. Fmla is federal and if you want to take it and are eligible to take it then take it. 12 weeks a year.

You are. Work "safely" and stop caring about BS production numbers. Attendance is mandatory, effort is optional

I have fmla, stress will not get you approved for fmla. You have to use anxiety and show that you are being treated for it.

@Fido : Actually, FMLA is union negotiated, for part-time employees. Unless they meet the Federal threshold for hours worked (in which case their part-time status with the company is irrelevant). If they haven't cleared that bar, part-time are eligible for up to '6 weeks' of time off, per the negotiated union contract, (with other requirements/restrictions).

Sounds like you may have more problems than just work related stress. Seek a doctor that can help you regulate your stress and mental health. Put your phone on do not disturb and give yourself a break from any work related issues. If your load quality and misloads are a issue try slowing down and focusing on that instead of getting all the volume in the trucks. Me being a driver would take loading my truck for 10 to 15 mins than having misloads and bad load quality. Good luck I hope you can figure something out to help your mental health.

My preloader calls me way more than I call him, he tends to leave is wallet in my pkg car on a regular basis. I just tell him the next day about misloads if I see him
