i would never count on a pension these days

HSA isn't necessary for union members since our up front health coverage is great. Yes on maxing Roth IRA first since no 401K match.

you don't use an HSA for medical expenses now; an HSA is a traditional IRA with a few caveats, so you invest in it like you would an IRA, with the added bonus that if the SHTF in your health, you have extra available cash to draw on if you needed to

Might be good advice. I'd just rather have it compounding in tax sheltered retirement investments elsewhere unless it looks like the union health plan might collapse in the next contract.
